Powerless by Lauren Roberts is one of BookTok’s biggest fantasy sensations, and after hearing so much about it, I couldn’t wait to discover whether it truly lived up to the hype. With countless readers praising it as their new favourite romantasy, I started the novel expecting an unforgettable reading experience.

Instead, I found myself constantly thinking of other books I’d already loved. Powerless by Lauren Roberts immediately reminded me of Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, while parts of its atmosphere, political conflict, and social hierarchy echoed Half a King by Joe Abercrombie. Although those influences never completely overshadowed the story, they made much of it feel familiar rather than entirely original.

That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it. Lauren Roberts has a talent for writing addictive, fast-paced fantasy, balancing romance, danger, and court politics in a way that keeps the pages turning. Even when I could predict certain developments, I was still invested enough to want to know how the story would unfold.

By the time I reached the final chapter, I understood why Powerless by Lauren Roberts has attracted such a devoted fanbase. I enjoyed my time in the world Lauren Roberts created, and I’m curious enough to continue the series. While it never became the standout romantasy I had hoped for, it was still an entertaining read filled with memorable characters, engaging relationships, and enough intrigue to make me want to see where the story goes next.

Lauren Roberts has a talent for writing stories that are easy to get lost in, balancing action, romance and political intrigue in a way that keeps the pages turning. Even when I could predict where certain elements were heading, I was still eager to find out how everything would unfold. One reason Powerless by Lauren Roberts remains such a compelling read is its accessibility.

Rather than relying on a single standout feature, the novel succeeds because several aspects work together. The pacing rarely slows, the characters are engaging, and the world is detailed enough to feel immersive without becoming overwhelming.

Writing Style & Pacing

I experienced Powerless by Lauren Roberts as an audiobook, and it made for an incredibly easy listen. Even though the novel is over 500 pages long, it never felt slow or intimidating. Lauren Roberts writes in a clear, accessible style that keeps the story moving without getting lost in lengthy descriptions or complicated exposition.

The short chapters create that irresistible “just one more chapter” feeling, making it difficult to stop reading—or, in my case, listening. The dialogue flows naturally, the action scenes maintain tension, and quieter moments give the characters space to breathe without disrupting the pace.

Even when the plot itself didn’t always surprise me, the storytelling remained engaging enough that I wanted to see how every storyline would come together. Overall, Powerless by Lauren Roberts is incredibly easy to binge-read.

Characters

The characters were easily one of the strongest parts of the novel. Paedyn is a determined protagonist whose resilience makes her easy to root for, even when her decisions aren’t always perfect. Her motivations remain believable throughout, allowing an emotional connection to develop naturally.

Kai was probably my favourite character. Beneath his confident exterior lies a much more complex individual, torn between duty, family expectations and his own emotions. His interactions with Paedyn provide some of the novel’s most enjoyable moments, with their banter adding warmth to an otherwise dangerous and politically tense story.

I also appreciated that the supporting cast wasn’t simply there to fill the background. While not every secondary character receives extensive development, they contribute enough personality and purpose to make the world feel alive. The characters are one of the strongest reasons why Powerless by Lauren Roberts has become so popular.

World-Building

Lauren Roberts introduces the world gradually, allowing readers to discover its rules alongside the characters rather than through long information dumps. I never felt overwhelmed by the lore, which made it easy to stay immersed from beginning to end.

The divided society, built around those born with extraordinary abilities and those without them, creates a strong foundation for the story’s political conflict. It raises interesting questions about privilege, survival and power while providing constant tension throughout the novel.

Although the setting isn’t the most original fantasy world I’ve encountered, it’s easy to visualise and enjoyable to spend time in. Combined with the royal politics, deadly trials and slow-burn romance, it creates an addictive atmosphere that’s easy to understand why so many readers have fallen in love with. The setting helps make Powerless by Lauren Roberts an enjoyable fantasy, even if it isn’t the most original.

🤔What Didn’t Quite Work for Me

No book works perfectly for every reader, and Powerless by Lauren Roberts was one of those stories where my biggest challenge wasn’t the writing itself—it was the feeling of familiarity.

Having read fantasy for many years, I found myself drawing comparisons to books I already knew and loved. The story immediately reminded me of Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, while parts of its world and political tension brought Half a King by Joe Abercrombie to mind. Those similarities didn’t stop me from enjoying the book, but they did make it harder for the story to surprise me.

I also felt that some of the twists and character dynamics followed familiar YA fantasy patterns. As a result, there were moments when I could see where the story was heading before it got there. That sense of predictability took away some of the excitement I was hoping to experience.

That said, I completely understand why so many readers have fallen in love with this series. If Powerless is one of your first fantasy or romantasy books, it will probably feel much fresher than it did to me. Sometimes our reading experience is shaped just as much by the books we’ve already read as by the one currently in our hands.

For me, Powerless by Lauren Roberts wasn’t disappointing—it simply didn’t leave the lasting impression I had expected after hearing so much praise. It was an enjoyable journey, just not one that became a new favourite.

Powerless by Lauren Roberts is an excellent choice for readers who enjoy YA fantasy with a strong romantic storyline, political intrigue and plenty of action. If you love enemies-to-lovers tension, deadly competitions, hidden identities and slow-burn romance, there’s a good chance you’ll be hooked from the very first chapters.

I would especially recommend it to fans of The Red Queen, The Hunger Games, Divine Rivals, The Prison Healer and other accessible fantasy novels that balance adventure with character-driven relationships. While seasoned fantasy readers may recognise some familiar tropes, those who enjoy the genre—or are just beginning to explore romantasy—will likely find Powerless an entertaining and highly addictive read.

If you’re looking for a complex epic fantasy filled with intricate magic systems and unpredictable twists, this may not completely satisfy you. But if what you want is an engaging, fast-paced story with memorable characters, emotional tension and a romance that keeps you turning the pages, Powerless delivers exactly that.

Powerless by Lauren Roberts may not have become a new favourite, but I’m still glad I experienced it. Lauren Roberts has crafted an entertaining fantasy that blends political intrigue, memorable characters, and a compelling romance into a story that’s incredibly easy to get lost in.

Although it didn’t completely live up to the high expectations I had before starting it, I genuinely enjoyed the journey. The pacing kept me invested throughout, and by the final chapter I was already curious to continue with the rest of the series—a good sign that the story succeeded in drawing me into its world.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced romantasy filled with royal intrigue, dangerous trials, memorable characters, and plenty of romantic tension, Powerless by Lauren Roberts is well worth adding to your TBR.
