📚 John Scalzi Complete Bibliography | BookFairy
John Scalzi is one of the most recognisable voices in contemporary science fiction, known for combining ambitious speculative ideas with humour, fast-paced storytelling and memorable characters.

This BookFairy guide brings together his published books, major shorter works, series reading orders, English-language editions and verified Romanian translations.
It also distinguishes original publications from later reprints, collected editions and individually released stories.
Whether you’re beginning with Old Man’s War, exploring The Interdependency trilogy or looking for a particular Romanian edition, this bibliography is designed to help you navigate John Scalzi’s work without unnecessary duplication.
Bibliographical note: Publication years refer to the earliest identifiable release of each work, including digital and audio-first publications where relevant. This catalogue covers published books and documented shorter works through October 2026. Individual magazine and online publications continue to be cross-checked against bibliographical records.

Publication Notes
Agent to the Stars circulated online before its first printed edition in 2005. It is listed under its first book publication rather than the earlier online availability.
The Dispatcher, Murder by Other Means, Travel by Bullet and Constituent Service appeared as audiobooks before their later print editions.
The Human Division and The End of All Things also have individual components that were released separately before or alongside the complete volumes. These are discussed below.
Upcoming publication: Monsters of Ohio is scheduled for November 2026. It is not included among the already published works as of this update.
🚀 John Scalzi Series in Reading Order
Old Man’s War
John Scalzi’s best-known series began in 2005 and has grown into a major science-fiction universe.
Its central premise involves elderly humans who enlist in the Colonial Defense Forces and receive genetically engineered bodies to serve in interstellar conflicts.
As the series progresses, its focus expands from the personal experiences of soldiers to questions about identity, political power, diplomacy and humanity’s place among alien civilisations.
Main Novels – Publication Order
- Old Man’s War (2005)
- The Ghost Brigades (2006)
- The Last Colony (2007)
- Zoe’s Tale (2008)
- The Human Division (2013)
- The End of All Things (2015)
- The Shattering Peace (2025)
Companion Stories
- Questions for a Soldier (2005)
- The Sagan Diary (2007)
- After the Coup (2008)
These shorter works expand the fictional universe but are not additional numbered novels.
Recommended Reading Order
For first-time readers, I recommend following publication order.
The main novels establish the universe and develop its larger conflicts, while the shorter stories provide additional perspectives.
Zoe’s Tale is particularly interesting because it revisits events connected to The Last Colony from another character’s point of view.
💜 BookFairy Recommendation: Start with Old Man’s War and continue with The Ghost Brigades. The second novel expands the universe considerably, even though my personal reading experience was stronger with the first book.
The Human Division – Individual Episodes
The Human Division was originally released as a sequence of thirteen episodes before appearing as a complete novel.
For collectors, these episodes should not be counted as thirteen additional novels.
The original sequence is:
- The B-Team
- Walk the Plank
- We Only Need the Heads
- A Voice in the Wilderness
- Tales from the Clarke
- The Back Channel
- The Dog King
- The Sound of Rebellion
- The Observers
- This Must Be the Place
- A Problem of Proportion
- The Gentle Art of Cracking Heads
- Earth Below, Sky Above
The complete volume, The Human Division (2013), collects this narrative.
Readers who own the complete book do not need to purchase the individual episodes to follow the main story.
The End of All Things – Individual Parts
The End of All Things was also issued in individual instalments.
Its four principal sections are:
- The Life of the Mind
- This Hollow Union
- Can Long Endure
- To Stand or Fall
All four appeared in 2015.
The complete novel collects these parts into a single volume.
As with The Human Division, separate digital instalments and the complete collected edition represent the same underlying narrative, not five different novels.
🌌 The Interdependency Trilogy
This political space-opera trilogy takes place in a separate fictional universe.
Human civilisation depends upon the Flow, an extraordinary transportation system connecting distant settlements.
When that system becomes unstable, the survival of an entire interstellar civilisation is threatened.
Reading Order
- The Collapsing Empire (2017)
- The Consuming Fire (2018)
- The Last Emperox (2020)
The trilogy is complete and should be read in publication order.
🔍 Lock In Series
The Lock In novels combine science-fiction speculation with investigative mysteries.
Their world has been transformed by Haden’s Syndrome, a disease that leaves some individuals conscious but physically immobilised.
Reading Order
- Unlocked: An Oral History of Haden’s Syndrome (2014) – companion novella
- Lock In (2014)
- Head On (2018)
Unlocked provides background information about the fictional disease and its social consequences.
Readers may begin with Lock In and return to the companion novella later.
🕵️ The Dispatcher Series
The Dispatcher stories combine detective fiction with an unusual speculative premise involving death and the consequences of deliberate killing.
Reading Order
- The Dispatcher (2016)
- Murder by Other Means (2020)
- Travel by Bullet (2022)
The years above refer to their original audiobook releases.
Later printed editions appeared in 2017, 2021 and 2023 respectively.
📕 Standalone Novels
John Scalzi’s standalone fiction offers several alternatives for readers who do not want to begin a long series.
| Year | Title |
|---|---|
| 2005 | Agent to the Stars |
| 2006 | The Android’s Dream |
| 2011 | Fuzzy Nation |
| 2012 | Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas |
| 2022 | The Kaiju Preservation Society |
| 2023 | Starter Villain |
| 2025 | When the Moon Hits Your Eye |
These books range from humorous alien encounters and corporate intrigue to speculative adventures and affectionate explorations of science-fiction conventions.
Fuzzy Nation is a reimagining connected to H. Beam Piper’s earlier Little Fuzzy, rather than an instalment in one of Scalzi’s original series.
Redshirts won the Hugo Award for Best Novel and is particularly appealing to readers familiar with science-fiction television.
Starter Villain takes a comic approach to the conventions of supervillain stories, while The Kaiju Preservation Society offers a fast-moving adventure involving enormous creatures and scientific exploration.
📜 Novellas, Novelettes and Short Fiction
Scalzi has published shorter fiction in several formats, including limited-edition chapbooks, digital releases, audiobooks and anthologies.
Separately Published Shorter Works

| 2007 | The Sagan Diary | Old Man’s War universe |
| 2007 | How I Proposed to My Wife: An Alien Sex Story | Short fiction |
| 2008 | After the Coup | Old Man’s War universe |
| 2009 | The God Engines | Standalone novella |
| 2009 | Judge Sn Goes Golfing | Short fiction |
| 2014 | Unlocked: An Oral History of Haden’s Syndrome | Lock In companion |
| 2016 | The Dispatcher | Novella |

| 2023 | Slow Time Between the Stars | Short fiction |
| 2024 | Constituent Service | Novella |
| 2025 | 3 Days, 9 Months, 27 Years | Short fiction |
Several additional stories originally appeared in anthologies, online publications or specialised collections.
Those titles are recorded in the following section rather than being incorrectly presented as separately published books.
📚 Short-Story Collections and Anthologies
Collections by John Scalzi
Miniatures: The Very Short Fiction of John Scalzi (2016)
A collection bringing together very short pieces that demonstrate Scalzi’s distinctive humour and talent for exploring unusual speculative premises.
A Very Scalzi Christmas (2019)
A collection of Christmas-themed short fiction featuring Scalzi’s irreverent approach to seasonal storytelling.
These are collections of existing and related shorter works, not additional novels.
Anthologies Featuring John Scalzi
The following list identifies anthology appearances and the contributions documented by the author.
| Year | Anthology / Collection | Scalzi’s Contribution |
|---|---|---|
| 2008 | METAtropolis | Utere Nihil Non Extra Quiritationem Suis |
| 2009 | The New Space Opera 2 | The Tale of the Wicked |
| 2010 | Clash of the Geeks | The Making of the Unicorn Pegasus Kitten Art |
| 2013 | 21st Century Science Fiction | The Tale of the Wicked |
| 2016 | Black Tide Rising | On the Wall, with David Klecha |
| 2016 | Mash Up | Muse of Fire |
| 2016 | Loose Lips | Malcolm Long |
| 2018 | Robots vs. Fairies | Three Robots Experience Objects Left Behind from the Era of Humans for the First Time |
| 2023 | Far Reaches | Slow Time Between the Stars |
| 2025 | The Time Traveler’s Passport | 3 Days, 9 Months, 27 Years |
METAtropolis is especially notable because Scalzi also worked as its editor.
The same story may appear in more than one anthology. For example, The Tale of the Wicked appears in both The New Space Opera 2 and 21st Century Science Fiction.
Such appearances are documented without counting the story as two separate original works.
Love, Death + Robots
Several John Scalzi stories have been adapted for the animated anthology series Love, Death + Robots.
His work associated with the series includes:
- Three Robots
- When the Yogurt Took Over
- Alternate Histories
- Automated Customer Service
- Three Robots: Exit Strategies
- The Other Large Thing
Related prose adaptations and anthology publications should be distinguished from the original television episodes.
📘 John Scalzi Nonfiction Bibliography
Before becoming widely known as a novelist, Scalzi had already established a professional writing career.
His nonfiction includes guides, film criticism, humorous writing and collections of essays drawn from his long-running website, Whatever.

| 2018 | Virtue Signaling and Other Heresies: Selected Writings from Whatever, 2013–2018 |
Your Hate Mail Will Be Graded won the Hugo Award for Best Related Book.
These titles demonstrate that Scalzi’s career encompasses considerably more than his science-fiction novels.
Edition note: The Rough Guide to the Universe received a second edition in 2008. This is not listed as a separate original work.
🇷🇴 John Scalzi Books Published in Romanian
Several John Scalzi novels have been translated into Romanian, primarily through Nemira and its Nautilus and Armada science-fiction collections.
The table below distinguishes the original publication year from the Romanian edition dates that can be confirmed through publisher records.

Romanian Editions: Notes for Collectors
For readers collecting John Scalzi’s books in Romanian, the distinction between translations, reprints and publisher bundles is important.
A novel may have appeared first in Nemira’s Nautilus collection and later received a new Armada edition.
Both versions contain the same underlying work and should not automatically be treated as separate titles in a bibliography.
Similarly, publisher bundles containing two or more existing novels are retail collections, not new literary works.
Nemira has offered bundles of Războiul bătrânilor, Brigăzile fantomă and Ultima colonie, as well as a collected package of The Interdependency trilogy.
For current Romanian editions and publisher information, visit Nemira’s John Scalzi catalogue.
📦 Omnibus Editions, Boxed Sets and Reprints
Several John Scalzi titles have been released in different formats, including paperback editions, ebooks, audiobooks, limited editions and boxed sets.
For bibliographical purposes:
- An omnibus contains previously published works in one volume.
- A boxed set groups existing books without creating a new literary work.
- A reprint reproduces a previously published work.
- An episodic edition may contain one portion of a narrative later collected in a complete volume.
- An audiobook-first release may have an earlier publication date than its printed edition.
Particular care is needed with:
- The Human Division – thirteen episodes collected in one volume.
- The End of All Things – four individually released parts collected into a complete volume.
- The Dispatcher novellas – audio releases preceding print editions.
- Old Man’s War boxed sets – existing series novels packaged together.
- Romanian Nemira bundles – previously published translations sold as coordinated collections.
This system avoids artificially increasing the number of distinct works in Scalzi’s bibliography.
🎬 Other Creative Work
John Scalzi has also contributed to projects outside conventional book publishing.
He served as a creative consultant on Stargate Universe and has written stories adapted for Love, Death + Robots.
His work also extends to interactive entertainment and music.
These projects are part of his broader creative bibliography, but they are not counted as additional novels or books in the publication chronology.
📖 John Scalzi Books Reviewed on BookFairy
Old Man’s War (2005)
Series: Old Man’s War #1
I found Old Man’s War an incredibly engaging introduction to Scalzi’s universe.
The combination of military science fiction, humour and questions about ageing, identity and second chances made it a memorable reading experience.
📖 Read my Old Man’s War review
The Ghost Brigades (2006)
Series: Old Man’s War #2
The Ghost Brigades introduces fascinating ideas involving genetically engineered soldiers, consciousness, inherited memories and free will.
Although I appreciated those ideas, the second instalment did not make quite the same impression on me as its predecessor.

Further reviews will be added as I continue exploring his bibliography.
