π Andy Weir Complete Bibliography: Novels, Short Stories, Graphic Novels & Publication Order
Andy Weir is an American science-fiction writer whose work combines scientific accuracy, space exploration, humour, survival and imaginative speculation.
Best known for The Martian, Artemis and Project Hail Mary, Weir has also written short stories, novellas, web fiction, comics and graphic novels.
His bibliography is more extensive than his three commercially published novels might suggest.
Before becoming an internationally successful novelist, Weir published stories and comics online, experimenting with science fiction, fantasy, philosophical questions and literary crossovers.
This BookFairy bibliography brings together his novels, shorter fiction, graphic works, online publications and Romanian translations.
The catalogue distinguishes original publication dates from later commercial editions, adaptations and reprints.

π Andy Weir’s Works in Chronological Order
The following timeline covers Weir’s principal original works and identifiable publication projects.

π Full-Length Novels
The Martian (2011 / 2014)
Original online publication: 2011
Commercial publication: 2014
Publisher: Crown
Genre: Hard Science Fiction, Survival, Space Adventure
The Martian follows astronaut Mark Watney, who becomes stranded on Mars after his crew is forced to evacuate.
Believed dead and left with limited resources, Watney must rely on scientific knowledge, engineering and determination to survive.
The novel is particularly notable for the practical detail behind its central premise.
Problems involving food, water, oxygen, communication and equipment become the foundation of its suspense.
Weir initially shared the story online before it attracted the attention of commercial publishers.
The novel’s success transformed his writing career and led to the 2015 film adaptation directed by Ridley Scott.
Related Short Fiction
- Diary of an AssCan (2015)
- The Martian: Lost Sols (2024)
These are additional stories associated with The Martian, not separate full-length novels.
Artemis (2017)
Publisher: Crown
Genre: Science Fiction, Lunar Thriller
Format: Novel
Set in humanity’s first permanent lunar settlement, Artemis follows Jazz Bashara, a young woman trying to improve her financial circumstances.
Her involvement in a dangerous scheme exposes tensions within the Moon’s developing economy.
The novel explores how an extraterrestrial city might function, including its infrastructure, trade, economic inequalities and legal arrangements.
Unlike The Martian, the narrative combines technological speculation with the structure of a crime thriller.
Project Hail Mary (2021)
Publisher: Ballantine Books
Genre: Hard Science Fiction, First Contact, Space Adventure
Format: Novel
Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, who awakens aboard a spacecraft without remembering his identity or the purpose of his mission.
As he gradually reconstructs his situation, he discovers that the consequences extend far beyond his personal survival.
The novel explores scientific discovery, biological possibilities, communication and cooperation.
It combines Weir’s familiar enthusiasm for problem-solving with an ambitious interstellar premise.
π¦ Project Hail Mary β BookFairy Review
I experienced Project Hail Mary through the Romanian audiobook narrated by Andrei HuΘuleac.
The combination of science and humour was what particularly appealed to me.
Some of the physics and technical calculations were difficult to follow while listening, but the discoveries and attempts at communication remained fascinating.
I also appreciated the ending’s sense of coming full circle.

π₯ Short Stories and Short-Fiction Collections
The Egg (2009)
First publication: Galactanet
Format: Short story
Genre: Philosophical Speculative Fiction
One of Andy Weir’s best-known shorter works, The Egg explores questions about consciousness, identity and human existence.
Its philosophical premise differs considerably from the scientific survival problems that dominate his longer novels.
The story became widely circulated online and has been translated into numerous languages by readers.
It is available on Andy Weir’s original writing website.
Principles of Uncertainty (2016)
Publisher/platform: Tapas
Format: Digital short-fiction collection
Principles of Uncertainty brings together nine short pieces:
- Access
- Annie’s Day
- Antihypoxiant
- Meeting Sarah
- The Midtown Butcher
- The Chef
- The Egg
- The Real Deal
- Yuri Gagarin Saves the Galaxy
The collection demonstrates Weir’s interest in speculative ideas that can be developed within much shorter narratives.
Several stories had already appeared online before the collection was assembled.
Yuri Gagarin Saves the Galaxy was presented as a new story in the 2016 collection.
Because the collection gathers existing material, its publication should not be treated as the first appearance of every included story.
Additional Short Fiction Published Online
Weir’s original creative-writing website also lists the following standalone works:
- Bored World
- Rat
- Twarrior
It additionally provides access to stories subsequently included in Principles of Uncertainty.
Precise original publication dates for every online story have not been established, so these works are listed without invented chronological information.
Lacero (2016)
Genre: Science-fiction fan fiction
Related fictional universe: Ready Player One
Lacero is an unusual contribution to Weir’s bibliography.
Originally written as fiction connected to Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One, it was subsequently included in a published edition of that novel.
Although connected to another writer’s fictional world, it remains a distinct piece written by Weir.
It should not be confused with a sequel to The Martian or Artemis.
Randomize (2019)
Collection: Forward
Publisher: Amazon Original Stories
Genre: Science Fiction, Technological Thriller
Format: Novella
Randomize explores the relationship between technology, probability, computer systems and human ingenuity.
Its story takes place against the backdrop of a casino and a sophisticated random-number-generation system.
The novella belongs to Forward, a collection featuring contributions from several science-fiction authors.
Each contribution is a standalone work rather than a chapter in a continuous novel.
π΄ The Martian β Related Stories and Reading Order
Although The Martian is a standalone novel, Weir has written supplementary material featuring Mark Watney.
These pieces expand on moments before or during the main adventure.
Suggested Reading Order
- The Martian β Original online edition, 2011; commercial edition, 2014.
- Diary of an AssCan β 2015; a short prequel associated with Watney’s astronaut training.
- The Martian: Lost Sols β 2024; additional material presented through Watney’s log entries.
The supplementary stories are optional.
For a first-time reader, The Martian itself remains the best starting point.
The Martian: Lost Sols (2024)
Released in connection with the tenth anniversary of the commercial publication of The Martian, Lost Sols offers additional episodes from Watney’s experience.
It was distributed as a short PDF through Weir’s website.
The story should be catalogued independently as supplementary fiction, not as another edition of the original novel.
π¨ Comics and Graphic Novels
Casey and Andy (2001β2008)
Format: Webcomic
Creator: Andy Weir
Casey and Andy was one of Weir’s early online creative projects.
It combines comedy, science-fiction elements and deliberately absurd situations.
Its humour often centres on scientific experimentation and exaggerated consequences.
The webcomic is important to understanding Weir’s creative development before his success as a novelist.
Cheshire Crossing (2006β2008 / 2019)
Original format: Webcomic
Graphic-novel edition: 2019
Illustrator of the 2019 edition: Sarah Andersen
Publisher: Ten Speed Graphic
Cheshire Crossing imagines a meeting between three iconic fantasy heroines:
- Alice from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
- Wendy from Peter Pan.
- Dorothy from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The narrative combines literary fantasy with humour and adventure.
Weir originally developed the project as an online comic.
The 2019 graphic novel features artwork by Sarah Andersen.
The two versions are connected editions of the same underlying creative project and should not be counted as unrelated stories.
π Other Online Fiction and Serial Projects
Weir’s original writing archive includes several longer online projects and fan-fiction experiments.
Bonnie MacKenzie: The Life Story of a Mermaid
An online serial featuring a mermaid protagonist.
The original archive presents the story in multiple instalments.
Moriarty
A series of Sherlock Holmes-inspired stories centred on Professor Moriarty.
The original archive includes:
- The Adventure of the Dishonor Among Thieves
- The Adventure of the Unscrupulous Assassin
- The Adventure of the Sealed Room
These works are part of Weir’s early online fiction and should be distinguished from original commercially published novels.
The Romana Chronicles / The Xoloans
A Doctor Who-inspired fan-fiction project featuring Romana.
The online archive presents The Xoloans in four parts.
As with Moriarty, this material belongs in a complete record of Weir’s writing but is not part of his original standalone novel bibliography.
Theft of Pride (2000)
An early novel-length web publication associated with Weir’s writing before The Martian.
Its existence is relevant to the development of his career, but it should not be confused with a conventionally published commercial novel.
π§ Audio Collections and Performances
The Egg and Other Stories (2017)
Format: Audiobook collection
An audio presentation of Weir’s shorter fiction.
This release is listed separately because it is an audio collection rather than a newly written novel.
James Moriarty, Consulting Criminal (2017)
Publisher: Audible Studios
Format: Audio fiction
This title belongs to Weir’s Sherlock Holmes-inspired work.
It should not be listed among his science-fiction novels.
π·π΄ Andy Weir in Romanian Translation
All three of Andy Weir’s major commercially published novels have appeared in Romanian.
MarΘianul β The Martian
First Romanian edition: 2015
Publisher: Paladin
Translator: Iulia Anania
Original commercial publication: 2014
The first Romanian edition was published in hardcover.
A new edition appeared at Nemira β Armada in 2026, also translated by Iulia Anania.
These publications represent different editions of the same novel.
Artemis β Artemis
Romanian edition: 2019
Publisher: Paladin
Translator: Mihai-Dan Pavelescu
Format: Hardcover
Original publication: 2017
The Romanian edition retains the original English title.
Proiectul Hail Mary β Project Hail Mary
First Romanian edition: 2021
Publisher: Nemira β Armada
Translator: Iulia Anania
Original publication: 2021
Nemira published another paperback edition in February 2026.
The novel is also available as a Romanian audiobook narrated by Andrei HuΘuleac.
This is the format in which I experienced the story before writing my BookFairy review.
Romanian Publication Table
| Original work | Romanian title | First Romanian edition | Translator |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Martian (2014) | MarΘianul | Paladin, 2015 | Iulia Anania |
| Artemis (2017) | Artemis | Paladin, 2019 | Mihai-Dan Pavelescu |
| Project Hail Mary (2021) | Proiectul Hail Mary | Nemira β Armada, 2021 | Iulia Anania |
Romanian Editions and Reprints
For collectors, the distinction between an original translation and a later edition is important.
For example:
- MarΘianul appeared at Paladin in 2015 and at Nemira in 2026.
- Proiectul Hail Mary appeared in Romanian in 2021 and received a new Nemira edition in 2026.
These are not additional original novels.
Similarly, audiobook editions and special covers represent alternative ways of experiencing existing works.
π Andy Weir Reading Order
Weir’s three principal novels are standalone stories.
Readers do not need to read them in a particular order to understand their plots.
Nevertheless, publication order offers an interesting view of his development as a writer.
Recommended Novel Reading Order
- The Martian (2014)
- Artemis (2017)
- Project Hail Mary (2021)
Complete Discovery Route
For readers who want to explore beyond the novels:
- The Martian
- Diary of an AssCan
- The Martian: Lost Sols
- Artemis
- Project Hail Mary
- The Egg
- Principles of Uncertainty
- Randomize
- Cheshire Crossing
- Casey and Andy
The final list is a suggested exploration route rather than a strict chronological bibliography.
π Special Editions, Reprints and Adaptations
The following should not be counted as separate original novels:
- The Martian β classroom, film tie-in and deluxe editions.
- Project Hail Mary β special, film tie-in and deluxe editions.
- Cheshire Crossing β earlier online version and later illustrated graphic-novel edition.
- Romanian paperback or hardcover reissues of previously translated works.
- Audio adaptations of existing stories.
The purpose of this distinction is to create an accurate catalogue of original writing while still acknowledging editions that may interest collectors.
