📖 About Lauren Roberts

Lauren Roberts is an internationally bestselling American author best known for creating Powerless, a young adult romantic fantasy series combining deadly competitions, political intrigue, forbidden romance and a society divided by extraordinary abilities.

Born and raised in Michigan, Roberts developed a passion for reading and writing fantasy stories. Her debut novel, Powerless, became an international publishing success, followed by the companion novella Powerful and the sequels Reckless and Fearless.

Her books have attracted a large readership through their fast-paced storytelling, emotionally charged relationships and accessible fantasy world-building.

Set in the Kingdom of Ilya, the Powerless series introduces a society divided between the Elites, who possess supernatural abilities, and the Ordinaries, who do not.

At the centre of the story is Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary forced to conceal her identity while navigating a dangerous world dominated by powerful rulers.

Although the series contains political conflict, trials and questions about inequality, romance is one of its central elements.

On BookFairy, I review Lauren Roberts’ books from my own reading experience, exploring both the qualities that make them entertaining and the aspects that do not always work for me.

💜 Why I Read Lauren Roberts

I first became interested in Lauren Roberts because of the extraordinary popularity of Powerless.

After seeing the novel recommended so enthusiastically, I wanted to discover whether it truly offered something different from the fantasy and dystopian stories I had already enjoyed.

What I found was an entertaining, accessible novel with engaging characters and a fast-moving plot, but also a story that reminded me strongly of other books.

In particular, Powerless brought to mind Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard and, in certain aspects of its political setting, Half a King by Joe Abercrombie.

That familiarity prevented the novel from feeling especially original to me.

Nevertheless, I appreciated Roberts’ ability to maintain an engaging pace. Her chapters are easy to follow, the dialogue flows naturally, and the story combines romance, danger and intrigue in a way that makes it difficult to stop reading.

I experienced both Powerless and Powerful as audiobooks, and Roberts’ approachable writing style worked particularly well in that format.

I also enjoyed the characters, especially Kai Azer. His personality, divided loyalties and interactions with Paedyn were among my favourite aspects of the first novel.

However, Powerful did not have quite the impact I had hoped for. Although I enjoyed returning to the Kingdom of Ilya, the companion novella did not add enough to change my overall impression of the series.

For me, Lauren Roberts writes entertaining fantasy romance, even if her books have not become personal favourites.

That distinction matters on BookFairy: I can appreciate an enjoyable reading experience without considering it exceptional.

⚔️ Powerless (2023)

The Powerless Trilogy — Book #1

Powerless introduces Paedyn Gray and the Kingdom of Ilya, where survival depends on possessing extraordinary abilities—or convincing everyone that you do.

I enjoyed its fast pacing, accessible writing and engaging characters, particularly Kai.

However, the world and central conflicts reminded me of other fantasy series, making the novel entertaining rather than particularly original.

Powerless

💜 Powerful (2024)

The Powerless Trilogy — Companion Novella #1.5

Powerful revisits events from the first novel through a different perspective.

Although I appreciated spending more time in Ilya, I found that the novella added relatively little to my overall experience.

The writing remained enjoyable and easy to follow, but the additional perspective did not provide the memorable revelations or emotional impact I had hoped for.

For first-time readers, I recommend following publication order:

📚 Other Books by Lauren Roberts

Beyond the original three novels, the author has expanded the Powerless universe through companion stories.

Powerful (2024)

The novella explores events and characters associated with the first novel.

Although it contributes additional context, it should not be mistaken for a second main-series novel.

Fearful (2025)

A second companion novella associated with the conclusion of the trilogy.

Collected and Special Editions

The Powerless books have appeared in boxed sets, illustrated or decorated editions, and collector-oriented formats.

These include editions with sprayed edges and other special design features.

Such publications contain existing stories and should not be counted as new original novels.

⭐ Where Should You Start?

If you want to discover Lauren Roberts’ work, the obvious starting point is Powerless.

It introduces the Kingdom of Ilya, the conflict between Elites and Ordinaries, and the relationship between Paedyn and Kai.

Its accessible writing and fast pace make it particularly suitable for readers who enjoy fantasy romance without complicated world-building.

However, I would approach the book with realistic expectations.

Readers familiar with Red Queen, dystopian competitions and forbidden-romance stories may recognise several elements.

That does not necessarily make the novel less enjoyable, but it is worth knowing that originality was not its strongest quality for me.

If you enjoy Powerless, continue with Powerful before Reckless for the full publication-order experience.

If companion novellas are not your preference, you can proceed directly to the second main novel.

💜 My Lauren Roberts Reading Experience

Of the Lauren Roberts books I have reviewed so far, Powerless was the more engaging experience.

I appreciated its pace, accessible writing and characters, even though its world-building and political conflicts felt familiar.

Kai was particularly memorable, and his relationship with Paedyn added much of the tension and emotional appeal.

Powerful was enjoyable as an audiobook, but it did not significantly deepen my connection with the series. I had hoped for a companion story that would offer an unexpected perspective or particularly memorable revelation.

Instead, it felt like an extension of a story I already knew.

Lauren Roberts has a talent for writing entertaining, easy-to-follow fantasy romance, and I understand why her books have attracted such an enthusiastic readership.

For my own tastes, however, I generally prefer fantasy with more original concepts and stronger emphasis on world-building than romance.

That is why I can enjoy the Powerless books while still recognising that they are not quite the kind of fantasy that becomes an all-time favourite for me.
