📝 First Impressions
Stephen King has always been one of my favourite authors, so naturally, I was curious to see what he would do with a more traditional detective story. Mr. Mercedes, the first novel in the Bill Hodges trilogy, takes a different direction from the supernatural horror and psychological darkness I usually associate with his writing.
I read the book in 2016, and although I no longer remember every detail, my overall impression has stayed with me. It was a decent crime thriller, but nothing particularly remarkable. I found it rather ordinary, especially considering the author behind it.
There was nothing fundamentally wrong with the experience. It simply didn’t leave the kind of lasting impression that many of King’s other books have made on me.
💜 What I Loved
One thing I appreciate about Stephen King is his willingness to explore different genres. Although he is best known for horror, his bibliography extends far beyond it, and Mr. Mercedes demonstrates his interest in telling a more conventional crime story.
The novel introduces retired detective Bill Hodges and builds its central mystery around a disturbing crime. Rather than relying on supernatural elements, King approaches the story through investigation, suspense and the confrontation between a detective and a dangerous criminal.
I enjoyed seeing King work within the crime thriller genre. The book was readable and sufficiently engaging for me to finish it, even if it never became one of my favourite experiences with his fiction.
And perhaps that is the most positive thing I can say about it today: I remember it as an acceptable read, just not an especially memorable one.
🤔 What Didn’t Quite Work for Me
My main disappointment was how ordinary the story felt. For me, Mr. Mercedes was essentially a detective investigating a crime, and while there is nothing inherently wrong with that premise, I didn’t find anything particularly distinctive about the experience.
I have read enough Stephen King to know how imaginative, unsettling and memorable his storytelling can be. Against that background, this novel felt comparatively conventional. It didn’t surprise me or capture my imagination in the way I had hoped.
This isn’t a criticism of a specific character, scene or plot twist. After so many years, I wouldn’t want to invent details that I no longer remember. What I do remember is the overall feeling that the book was rather unremarkable.
Ultimately, it was an enjoyable enough detective story, but not one that made me eager to continue the trilogy.
👥 Who Would Enjoy This Book?
Mr. Mercedes is likely to appeal to readers who enjoy crime fiction, detective investigations and psychological thrillers, particularly those who prefer stories without supernatural elements.
It could also be an interesting starting point for readers who are curious about Stephen King but don’t usually enjoy horror. The novel offers a different side of his writing, concentrating on a criminal investigation rather than the supernatural threats associated with many of his best-known works.
Fans of traditional detective fiction may appreciate its familiar structure more than I did. My own reading experience was shaped partly by how much I love King’s more imaginative stories, and someone approaching this book primarily as a crime thriller might respond differently.
💭 Final Thoughts
Looking back, Mr. Mercedes was a perfectly decent but rather forgettable reading experience. It wasn’t a bad book, and I wouldn’t discourage anyone who enjoys detective fiction from giving it a chance. It simply didn’t offer anything particularly special for me.
Stephen King remains one of my favourite authors, and one average reading experience doesn’t change that. With such an extensive and varied bibliography, it’s only natural that some of his novels will appeal to me much more than others.
I haven’t continued with the remaining books in the Bill Hodges trilogy, so my opinion applies only to this first volume. Perhaps the story develops in more interesting directions later, but Mr. Mercedes itself didn’t leave me curious enough to find out.
For me, it was an ordinary detective thriller from an author capable of extraordinary stories.
