📝 First Impressions
Cel-ce-simte by Teodora Matei was one of my Romanian science fiction reads in 2016, and it left me with a very positive impression. I remember considering it an excellent book, one that kept me interested in the mystery at the heart of its story and made me appreciate the author’s approach to the genre.
What I particularly enjoyed was the combination of science fiction and mystery. These are two genres I love, and bringing them together creates an intriguing premise: a story in which the reader is invited not only to discover what happens next but also to think about the questions and uncertainties surrounding the central case.
Although several years have passed since I read it, my overall impression remains clear. This was a book I genuinely enjoyed, even if one aspect of its conclusion did not quite work for me.
💜 What I Loved
The strongest part of my reading experience was the story itself. Cel-ce-simte offered the kind of mystery that makes me want to keep reading, combining an intriguing investigation with a science fiction setting. I appreciated the way these elements worked together rather than feeling like two separate genres competing for attention.
I also enjoyed Teodora Matei’s storytelling. There is something particularly satisfying about discovering Romanian authors who explore speculative fiction through their own ideas and perspectives. I am always interested in Romanian science fiction, and this novel was a rewarding addition to my reading.
Most importantly, the book left me with the feeling that I had read something genuinely good. Even though I cannot recall every detail of the plot after so many years, I still remember how much I liked it, and that positive impression matters more to me than trying to reconstruct scenes or characters I no longer remember clearly.
🤔 What Didn’t Quite Work for Me
My one reservation concerned the resolution of the central case. I felt that certain parts of the investigation were brought to a conclusion a little too quickly, especially compared with the interest the mystery had generated along the way.
I would have preferred a slightly more developed resolution, giving the final discoveries more room to unfold. That might have made the conclusion feel as satisfying as the rest of the reading experience.
However, this was a relatively small criticism rather than something that spoiled the book for me. I still considered Cel-ce-simte an excellent read, and my overall opinion remained firmly positive.
👥 Who Would Enjoy This Book?
Cel-ce-simte is worth exploring if you enjoy Romanian speculative fiction, particularly stories that combine science fiction with an investigative mystery. Readers who appreciate a central case to unravel alongside imaginative genre elements may find its premise especially appealing.
I would also recommend considering it if you want to discover more Romanian authors writing beyond conventional literary genres. For me, part of the pleasure of reading science fiction has always been encountering different storytelling voices, and Teodora Matei belongs among the writers I am glad to have discovered.
💭 Final Thoughts
Looking back on Cel-ce-simte, what remains with me is the enjoyment of the reading experience rather than the details of the investigation. I read it in 2016, found it excellent and appreciated its combination of science fiction and mystery.
The somewhat hurried resolution was the only aspect that prevented the book from feeling entirely satisfying. Even so, it did not overshadow everything I liked about the novel.
Cel-ce-simte remains a very positive reading memory and a reminder of why I enjoy discovering Romanian speculative fiction. It is a book I remember fondly and one that earned its place among my enjoyable reads of 2016.
