📝 First Impressions

What would it take for someone to walk away from everything they have built and start living on the streets? Their home, their family, their job, the comfort of a familiar routine — all abandoned for a completely different existence. It is a fascinating and rather unsettling idea, and one of the main reasons why Vânătorii de capete by Lucian Dragoș Bogdan made such a strong impression on me when I read it in 2016.

The story follows Dinu, a salesman from Alba Iulia who decides to leave his ordinary life behind and enter the world of homeless people. His decision is connected to a disturbing series of murders, with victims whose deaths seem to attract little attention. What begins as an unusual personal choice gradually develops into a dangerous investigation, placing Dinu in situations far removed from the security of his former existence.

I was immediately fascinated by the premise. There is something compelling about a character who deliberately steps outside the life society expects him to lead, particularly when doing so means entering a world most people prefer to ignore. I also had another reason to become attached to this novel: its setting. Alba Iulia is a city I have known since childhood, and recognising familiar places throughout the story made reading it an especially enjoyable experience.

💜 What I Loved

The idea behind Vânătorii de capete was what impressed me most. I found myself thinking about the enormous difference between imagining an escape from everyday life and actually doing it. Almost everyone has experienced moments when responsibilities, expectations and routines become exhausting, but very few people would seriously consider abandoning everything familiar and starting again on the streets. The fact that Dinu takes such a radical step immediately makes his story interesting.

I particularly liked how the novel uses this decision to explore a side of society that often remains invisible. Homeless people are part of the urban landscape, yet their lives rarely receive the same attention as those of people with homes, jobs and established social positions. By placing its protagonist among them, the story creates opportunities for encounters and observations that would otherwise be impossible. It also raises uncomfortable questions about how easily someone can disappear from ordinary society and how little attention others might pay.

Then there was Alba Iulia. My mother comes from the surrounding area, and I have known the city since I was a child, particularly its central neighbourhoods. Reading a novel set somewhere so familiar gave me a wonderful sense of recognition. I could picture parts of the city, remember places I had visited and connect the fictional events with my own memories. There is a particular pleasure in discovering a familiar location through someone else’s imagination, especially when it becomes the setting for a mystery.

I also appreciated the combination of an unconventional protagonist and a crime investigation. Dinu is not a typical detective following established procedures. His circumstances allow him to approach people and situations differently, and that gives the story an identity of its own. Rather than simply following another police investigation, I was reading about someone whose unusual choices placed him at the centre of a dangerous mystery.

🤔 What Didn’t Quite Work for Me

Looking back at a book I read in 2016, I cannot honestly identify a particular weakness that bothered me at the time. My original review is no longer available, and I would rather acknowledge that than invent criticisms simply to fill this section.

What I do remember very clearly is how much I enjoyed the central idea and the experience of following the story through a city that meant something to me personally. Those impressions have survived the years, which says quite a lot about the book’s impact.

👥 Who Would Enjoy This Book?

Vânătorii de capete should appeal to readers who enjoy crime fiction with an unconventional protagonist and a premise that offers more than a straightforward murder investigation. If you like mysteries that explore different layers of society, characters who make unexpected choices and stories in which an ordinary life takes a dramatic turn, this novel is worth discovering.

I would particularly recommend it to readers interested in Romanian crime fiction. There is something refreshing about a mystery unfolding in a recognisable Romanian setting rather than another familiar international location. For those who know Alba Iulia, the setting may add an extra layer of enjoyment, just as it did for me.

Readers who appreciate stories about identity, personal freedom and the possibility of abandoning an established existence may also find Dinu’s decision fascinating, regardless of whether they agree with it.

💭 Final Thoughts

Some books stay with us because of an extraordinary character or an unexpected ending. Others remain memorable because they introduce an idea that makes us question something we normally take for granted. For me, Vânătorii de capete belongs to the second category.

Years after reading it, I still remember being fascinated by the possibility of someone suddenly walking away from their entire life and choosing to live on the streets. It is such a dramatic change of circumstances that I could not help wondering what would drive a person to make that decision and how they would manage once the familiar comforts and protections of everyday life had disappeared.

My personal connection with Alba Iulia made the experience even more memorable. Recognising places from my childhood while following a fictional investigation brought together two things I love about reading: discovering an imaginative story and unexpectedly reconnecting with my own memories.

I may no longer remember every detail of the plot, but I remember how much I enjoyed the book. More importantly, I remember why.
