📖 About Elizabeth Lim

Elizabeth Lim is a bestselling American fantasy author whose novels draw inspiration from fairy tales, East Asian folklore, mythology and imaginative magical worlds. She is best known for The Blood of Stars duology, Six Crimson Cranes, The Dragon’s Promise and Her Radiant Curse, as well as her contributions to Disney’s A Twisted Tale series.

Before becoming a novelist, Lim worked as a composer for films and video games. She studied at Harvard College and the Juilliard School, and her musical background is reflected in the rhythm and atmosphere of her storytelling.

Her fantasy novels often feature resourceful heroines, powerful curses, complicated family relationships and difficult choices. Although romance plays a role in many of her books, Lim also places considerable emphasis on loyalty, sacrifice, identity and the consequences of magic.

One of the most distinctive aspects of her work is the way she transforms familiar fairy-tale elements into stories with their own identities. Her novels combine the atmosphere of traditional legends with imaginative world-building and characters who must discover their own strength.

💜 Why I Read Elizabeth Lim

What attracts me to Elizabeth Lim’s fantasy is her ability to create worlds that feel as though they belong in an old collection of legends. Her stories contain dragons, curses, magical creatures and royal intrigue, but the emotional journeys of her characters remain just as important as the fantasy elements.

I particularly appreciate her writing style. Lim’s prose is elegant and descriptive without becoming unnecessarily complicated. She creates enchanting settings while keeping her stories accessible and enjoyable.

Another reason I enjoy her work is that romance rarely needs to carry the entire narrative. In The Dragon’s Promise, for example, I appreciated how family, responsibility, loyalty and personal growth remained central to Shiori’s journey.

I also admire the way Lim allows her stories to evolve. Six Crimson Cranes begins with recognisable fairy-tale influences, while The Dragon’s Promise develops a broader mythology and a more independent fantasy identity.

That combination of folklore, character development and imaginative storytelling makes Elizabeth Lim an author I want to continue exploring.

🐉 The Dragon’s Promise (2022)

Six Crimson Cranes — Book #2

An enchanting sequel that expands Shiori’s world through ancient dragons, forgotten magic and difficult choices. I particularly enjoyed the mythology and character development, although some sections of the story moved more slowly than I would have liked.

✨ Other Stories Set in the Same Fantasy World

Several Elizabeth Lim novels share the wider fictional setting of Lor’yan.

Her Radiant Curse (2023)

A standalone fantasy exploring the relationship between two sisters, one celebrated for her beauty and the other feared because of a curse.

The novel takes place before the events of Six Crimson Cranes and provides additional background to its mythology.

Although it is a prequel, readers can discover it after the original duology to preserve the order in which the fictional world was introduced.

A Forgery of Fate (2025)

A fantasy retelling inspired by Beauty and the Beast, featuring a young woman whose unusual artistic gift allows her to glimpse the future.

It can be approached as a standalone adventure.

🏰 Disney’s A Twisted Tale

Elizabeth Lim has also contributed to Disney’s A Twisted Tale collection, which reimagines familiar animated films by changing a crucial element of their original stories.

Her novels include:

📚 Other Books by Elizabeth Lim

Beyond her best-known young adult fantasy novels, Elizabeth Lim has continued to explore fairy-tale retellings and different storytelling formats.

Fishbone Cinderella (2026)

Lim’s adult fantasy debut offers another reimagining of a familiar fairy tale, introducing a darker perspective on Cinderella.

A Twisted Tale Anthology (2023)

A multi-author collection featuring stories inspired by Disney’s animated worlds.

Legends of Lor’yan Four-Book Boxed Set (2023)

This collected edition includes:

  1. Spin the Dawn
  2. Unravel the Dusk
  3. Six Crimson Cranes
  4. The Dragon’s Promise

It brings together four previously published novels and does not contain four additional original works.

⭐ Where Should You Start?

If you are new to Elizabeth Lim, I recommend starting with Six Crimson Cranes.

It introduces a beautifully imagined world shaped by curses, magical creatures, family bonds and fairy-tale traditions. Its sequel, The Dragon’s Promise, expands that world and gives Shiori’s journey a satisfying continuation.

Readers interested in magical competitions, tailoring and imperial fantasy might prefer Spin the Dawn, the beginning of The Blood of Stars duology.

If you want a standalone novel, Her Radiant Curse is another option, particularly if you enjoy stories about sisterhood, sacrifice and the darker side of traditional fairy tales.

For Disney fans, the A Twisted Tale novels offer shorter, independent opportunities to explore Lim’s approach to retellings.

💜 My Elizabeth Lim Reading Experience

Of the Elizabeth Lim novels I have reviewed on BookFairy so far, The Dragon’s Promise stands out for the way it develops an established fantasy world without simply repeating its predecessor.

I enjoyed seeing Shiori become more confident and responsible, while the mythology surrounding dragons and ancient magic brought new depth to the story.

The middle section occasionally felt slower, and I would have liked more time with certain supporting characters. Nevertheless, I appreciated the novel’s emotional warmth, elegant writing and willingness to move beyond its original fairy-tale inspiration.

Elizabeth Lim’s greatest strength, for me, is the balance between the magical and the personal. Her stories may contain powerful enchantments and extraordinary creatures, but their emotional foundations lie in relationships, difficult decisions and the courage to protect the people we love.

That is what makes me want to return to her fantasy worlds.
