📖 About Dănuț Ungureanu

Dănuț Ungureanu (born 28 October 1958) is a Romanian writer, journalist, screenwriter and playwright, recognised for his contributions to Romanian science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction and contemporary literature.

Born in Calafat, Dolj County, Ungureanu studied at the Faculty of Power Engineering in Bucharest and initially worked as an engineer. However, literature soon became one of the defining elements of his professional life.

During the early 1980s, he became involved in Romania’s science-fiction community and led Solaris, a Bucharest-based science-fiction literary circle for students.

He made his literary debut in Știință și Tehnică magazine with the short story Viața de familie, published in 1982.

Over the following decades, his stories appeared in numerous Romanian magazines, anthologies and literary publications, including Almanahul Anticipația, Jurnalul SF, Helion, Orion and Paradox.

Ungureanu subsequently developed a substantial career in journalism, working for newspapers including Tineretul liber and Curentul. His experience as a journalist helped shape a literary voice particularly attentive to social behaviour, political absurdity, institutional power and the contradictions of contemporary Romanian society.

He is a member of the Writers’ Union of Romania and was a founding member and the first president of the Romanian Science Fiction and Fantasy Society.

His literary career extends beyond novels and short stories. He has written television scripts, radio drama and stage plays, demonstrating an interest in storytelling across several different media.

Among his best-known works are Așteptând în Ghermana, Însemnările damei de silicon, Noaptea în oraș, fără părinți and Luna în orașul blestemat.

He has also developed a significant creative partnership with fellow Romanian author Marian Truță, producing science-fiction novels, fantasy stories and historical mysteries.

Today, Dănuț Ungureanu occupies a distinctive position in Romanian speculative literature: a writer capable of combining imaginative premises with social criticism, humour, psychological observation and engaging storytelling.

✍️ Dănuț Ungureanu’s Literary World

One of the most distinctive qualities of Ungureanu’s writing is his ability to move between literary genres without abandoning his recognisable voice.

His fiction frequently combines elements of:

  • Science fiction and technological speculation.
  • Fantasy and the supernatural.
  • Dystopian societies and political satire.
  • Urban fiction and contemporary social realism.
  • Thriller and mystery.
  • Historical fiction.
  • Humour and the absurd.

Although speculative elements are important in much of his work, Ungureanu is particularly interested in human behaviour.

His characters often find themselves confronted by systems they cannot control, social structures that appear increasingly irrational or circumstances that force them to reconsider their assumptions about the world.

Satire is another important feature of his writing.

Ungureanu frequently uses humour to expose political hypocrisy, social conventions and the contradictions of modern life.

His work is therefore interesting not only to readers of Romanian science fiction but also to those who enjoy contemporary fiction with a strong critical perspective.

🚀 Dănuț Ungureanu’s Science Fiction

Așteptând în Ghermana (1993)

Waiting in Ghermana

Published by Nemira in 1993, Așteptând în Ghermana is one of Ungureanu’s defining works.

The novel emerged during a particularly important period for Romanian speculative literature, when the country’s publishing industry was undergoing major changes following the end of the communist regime.

It helped establish Ungureanu as a significant voice in Romanian science fiction.

The book received the RomCon award for best novel in 1994.

Its publication history includes:

  • 1993 — Nemira: Original edition.
  • 2010 — Eagle Publishing House: Republication in a collection devoted to Romanian science-fiction classics.
  • 2013 — Nemira: Anniversary edition in the Maeștrii SF-ului românesc collection.

These are editions of the same original work, not separate novels.

Însemnările damei de silicon (2014)

Notes of the Silicon Lady

This speculative novel was originally published by Nemira.

It later appeared in a revised presentation under the title Zilliconda – Însemnările damei de silicon, issued by Fusion21 in 2016.

The work belongs to Ungureanu’s imaginative fiction and illustrates his interest in unusual identities, speculative situations and unconventional storytelling.

The 2016 publication should be identified as a later edition of the existing novel.

🏛️ Gladivs — Historical Mystery Trilogy

The Gladivs trilogy marks an important development in the collaboration between Ungureanu and Marian Truță.

📘 Short Fiction & Story Collections

Short fiction has played a central role in Ungureanu’s writing career.

His early stories appeared in Romanian science-fiction publications before he established himself as a novelist.

Over time, his shorter works expanded into several different literary areas, including humour, satire, fantasy and contemporary fiction.

Marilyn Monroe pe o curbă închisă (1993)

  • Stăpânul ciolanului — with Marilena Dumitrescu; staged in 2011.

His television work includes numerous scripts for the Romanian comedy group Vouă.

This involvement in dramatic writing adds another dimension to his literary career, particularly his sense of dialogue, character interaction and comic timing.

✍️ Creative Writing & Non-Fiction

Autor de unul singur: Rețete pentru scrierea creativă (2016)

Published by Tritonic, this non-fiction book explores the practice of creative writing.

Drawing on his own experience, Ungureanu discusses the challenges, habits and personal decisions involved in becoming a writer.

Rather than presenting writing as a rigid formula, the book reflects on the solitary and individual nature of the creative process.

It received Tritonic’s bestseller distinction in 2017.

For readers interested in storytelling as a craft, this is an especially useful companion to Ungureanu’s fiction.

Ungureanu participated actively in this literary environment.

His involvement with the Solaris literary circle, the Romanian Science Fiction and Fantasy Society and numerous specialist publications helped connect his own writing with the wider Romanian speculative-fiction community.

He has contributed to anthologies including:

For example, Flight Over the Silent Mountain, translated from Zbor de pe muntele liniștit, appeared in Worlds and Beings: Romanian Contemporary Science-Fiction Stories (2015).

This international presence forms an important part of the broader history of Romanian science fiction in translation.
