📝 First Impressions
There are certain fictional characters who are so entertaining that simply returning to their world is a pleasure. For me, Melania Lupu is one of them. Rodica Ojog-Brașoveanu created a wonderfully unconventional character, and 320 de pisici negre (320 Black Cats) is a perfect example of the humour and ingenuity that make her crime novels so enjoyable.
I read the book in 2016 and gave it four stars. Although many of the finer details have faded over the years, one particular episode has stayed with me: the extraordinary lengths to which Melania manages to send a group of thieves in their search for her beloved cat, Mirciulică. The result is as ridiculous as it is hilarious, and it is exactly the kind of situation that makes me appreciate this author’s imagination.
What I have always loved about Rodica Ojog-Brașoveanu is that her mysteries offer more than a crime to solve. They have personality, memorable characters and a distinctly Romanian sense of humour. And when Melania Lupu is involved, you can never be entirely certain who is really in control of the situation.
💜 What I Loved
The moment I remember most vividly is the search for Mirciulică. Melania somehow manages to convince the thieves to look for her cat, and they end up bringing her black cats one after another, until an astonishing 320 have been collected. Just imagining the growing confusion and frustration of these men, completely outmanoeuvred by Melania, still makes me laugh.
What makes the situation so delightful is the reversal of power. The thieves might believe they are the ones controlling events, but Melania has other ideas. Her intelligence, resourcefulness and mischievous personality allow her to turn an extraordinary situation to her advantage. I love characters who can outsmart people without needing physical strength or authority, and Melania is particularly good at making others underestimate her.
And then, of course, there is Mirciulică. As someone who loves cats, I find the idea of an entire criminal escapade revolving around the search for one particular feline especially entertaining. The sheer absurdity of 320 black cats being brought in as possible replacements is wonderful, and it gives the novel a comic identity that I still remember a decade after reading it.
I also appreciate how naturally Rodica Ojog-Brașoveanu combines crime fiction with humour. Her mysteries are not simply puzzles that exist to be solved. They are populated by characters with distinctive personalities, and much of the pleasure comes from watching their interactions. Melania’s ability to manipulate situations with apparent ease is a wonderful example of this approach.
That combination of clever plotting, playful humour and memorable characters is why I have always enjoyed the author’s detective novels. Even when I forget the details of a particular investigation, I remember the pleasure of spending time with her wonderfully eccentric creations.
🤔 What Didn’t Quite Work for Me
I honestly cannot remember anything specific that bothered me about 320 de pisici negre. I read the novel in 2016, and although some of the plot has faded from memory, my enjoyment of Melania’s antics certainly hasn’t.
I gave the book four stars, but that doesn’t mean I necessarily had a particular criticism. I enjoyed the mystery, the humour and, above all, Melania’s extraordinary ability to make other people dance to her tune. Rather than invent a negative point I no longer remember, I prefer to let that positive impression speak for itself.
👥 Who Would Enjoy This Book?
320 de pisici negre is an excellent choice for readers who enjoy classic detective fiction with a generous helping of humour. If you appreciate mysteries featuring unconventional protagonists, clever manipulation and characters who are considerably more resourceful than they initially appear, Melania Lupu is someone worth discovering.
The novel will particularly appeal to readers who enjoy Romanian crime fiction and the distinctive social atmosphere found in Rodica Ojog-Brașoveanu’s books. Her stories have a personality of their own, combining criminal investigations with entertaining observations about human behaviour and relationships.
Cat lovers may also find the premise irresistible. A mystery involving the search for a beloved cat and an increasingly absurd procession of black felines certainly offers something different from the usual detective story.
As the third novel in the Melania Lupu series, it is best approached after Cianură pentru un surâs and Bună seara, Melania!, particularly for readers who want to follow the character’s development and appreciate the recurring relationships.
Above all, I would recommend it to anyone who likes their mysteries intelligent, entertaining and just a little mischievous.
💭 Final Thoughts
320 de pisici negre is one of those books that reminds me why I enjoy Rodica Ojog-Brașoveanu’s crime fiction so much. Her stories have a distinctive charm, and Melania Lupu is precisely the kind of character who can turn a criminal investigation into something wonderfully unpredictable.
What makes this novel particularly memorable to me is the extraordinary search for Mirciulică. Ten years after reading it, I can still remember the image of the thieves bringing back black cat after black cat, completely caught up in Melania’s scheme. It is such a ridiculous and delightful idea that I cannot help smiling whenever I think about it.
I may not remember every development in the mystery, but I remember how much I enjoyed the book. Its humour, its unconventional protagonist and that unforgettable feline episode have stayed with me long after the details of the investigation faded.
For me, 320 de pisici negre remains a thoroughly enjoyable Romanian crime classic, full of the wit and personality that make Melania Lupu such a pleasure to read.
