π About Travis Baldree
Travis Baldree is an American fantasy author, audiobook narrator and former video game developer, best known for Legends & Lattes, the novel that helped bring cosy fantasy to a much wider audience.
Before becoming a bestselling novelist, Baldree spent decades working in the video game industry, contributing to titles such as Torchlight, Fate and Rebel Galaxy. He later established himself as a professional audiobook narrator, lending his voice to hundreds of books across different genres.
His experience in both gaming and storytelling is reflected in his fiction. Rather than abandoning familiar fantasy settings, Baldree approaches them from a different perspective, exploring what happens when adventurers put down their weapons and begin thinking about the lives they want to build.
His debut novel, Legends & Lattes, was originally self-published in 2022. Its success led to traditional publication by Tor Books and introduced readers to Viv, an orc who decides to leave her violent past behind and open a coffee shop.
The novel became an international bestseller and received nominations for major fantasy and science-fiction awards, including the Hugo and Nebula Awards.
Baldree continued exploring this world in Bookshops & Bonedust, a prequel following a younger Viv, and Brigands & Breadknives, which shifts the focus towards Fern, a bookseller searching for a new direction in life.
What makes his fiction distinctive is its emphasis on friendship, community, personal transformation and the small decisions that can change someone’s life.
His stories demonstrate that fantasy does not always need enormous battles, elaborate political conflicts or world-ending threats to be engaging. Sometimes, opening a coffee shop, saving a struggling bookshop or finding the courage to start again can be an adventure in itself.

π Why I Read Travis Baldree
Travis Baldree had been on my reading radar for quite some time before I finally picked up one of his books.
Legends & Lattes had been read and discussed at various book clubs, and I kept coming across conversations about his charming, unconventional approach to fantasy.
I had also seen his books at Bookfest, displayed at the Alice Books stand, which made me even more curious about the stories and the world he had created.
Despite all that, I never quite managed to find the time to start reading him. As often happens when you have an ever-growing reading list, other books and commitments kept getting in the way.
It wasn’t until October 2026 that I finally decided to stop postponing the experience and explore his writing for myself.
What particularly interested me was the idea of a fantasy world where the focus shifts away from epic battles, dangerous quests and world-changing conflicts towards quieter, more personal stories.
As someone who loves fantasy and science fiction, I find it fascinating to discover how differently authors can approach familiar genres. Sometimes, the most interesting adventures are not necessarily about saving the world, but about finding your place in it.
I began with Legends & Lattes, listening to the Romanian audiobook on AudioTribe, narrated by Flavius CΔlin.
What stayed with me most was the way Viv’s dream gradually became something shared by an entire community. I particularly loved how the people around her came together when she needed help, and how she recognised their contributions rather than treating the coffee shop as her achievement alone.
That sense of kindness, friendship and mutual support was what made the story memorable for me.
After finishing Legends & Lattes, I moved on to Bookshops & Bonedust, curious to discover more about Viv’s earlier life and the experiences that helped shape her.

π Reading Order
If you’re planning to explore Travis Baldree’s Legends & Lattes universe, there are two ways to approach the novels: publication order and chronological order.
Although the books are designed to work as standalone stories, I recommend reading them in publication order.
This allows you to discover the characters and their world in the sequence Baldree originally introduced them.
π Publication Order (Recommended)
- Legends & Lattes (2022)
- Bookshops & Bonedust (2023)
- Brigands & Breadknives (2025)
- Tales from the Territory (2026) β short-story collection
β³ Chronological Order
- Bookshops & Bonedust
- Legends & Lattes
- Brigands & Breadknives
Tales from the Territory contains shorter stories set within the same fictional universe rather than a single continuous narrative, so it is best treated as additional reading.
π Additional Works & Upcoming Books
Beyond the three main novels in the Legends & Lattes universe, Travis Baldree has written shorter fiction and explored other storytelling formats.
Short Stories & Collections
- Pages to Fill β A short story set in the Legends & Lattes universe, available through the author’s official website.
- Goblins & Greatcoats (2024) β A short story introducing Zyll, a character who later appears in Brigands & Breadknives.
- Tales from the Territory (2026) β A collection featuring four stories: Goblins & Greatcoats, Just a Thimbleful, Mirograph and Cavaliers & Coffees.
Other Fiction
- Miss Gentle and the Case of the Very Flat Monk (2026) β A short work published in the Magic & Mystery collection.
- Four Bastards and a Baby (2027) β An upcoming LitRPG-inspired fantasy novel featuring an unlikely group of adventurers attempting to escape a dangerous dungeon.
Graphic Novel
- Legends & Lattes: The Graphic Novel (2026) β A full-colour adaptation of Baldree’s original novel, presenting Viv’s story in graphic-novel format.
These publications expand Baldree’s bibliography beyond the main Legends & Lattes novels. The graphic novel is an adaptation rather than a separate instalment in the series.
π BookFairy Recommendation
Start with Legends & Lattes, even though Bookshops & Bonedust takes place earlier in Viv’s life.
Reading the original novel first allows you to become familiar with Viv, her personality and the life she eventually chooses for herself.
The prequel then offers a different perspective, introducing a younger version of the character and exploring experiences that contribute to her personal development.
Brigands & Breadknives expands the world further by following Fern, a character introduced in Bookshops & Bonedust.
For readers who enjoy character-driven fantasy, following the publication order provides a natural introduction to the relationships and themes connecting these stories.
π·π΄ Romanian Editions
Travis Baldree’s cosy fantasy novels have also reached Romanian readers through Alice Books, which introduced the Legends & Lattes universe in its Daring Alice collection.
The Romanian editions include:
Legende & Latte
Original title: Legends & Lattes
Romanian publisher: Alice Books
Collection: Daring Alice
Publication year: 2024
Translator: Iulia Dromereschi
The Romanian edition introduces Viv and her unusual dream of exchanging a life of adventure and violence for the quieter challenges of running a coffee shop.
The novel is also available as a Romanian audiobook on AudioTribe, narrated by Flavius CΔlin.
This is the version I experienced for my BookFairy review.
Pagini & Pulbere
Original title: Bookshops & Bonedust
Romanian publisher: Alice Books
Publication year: 2025
Translator: Iulia Dromereschi
Set earlier in Viv’s life, Pagini & Pulbere follows the young orc after an injury forces her to recover in the seaside town of Murk.
There, an unexpected encounter with a struggling bookshop and its memorable inhabitants opens the door to new friendships and experiences.
For Romanian readers interested in discovering cosy fantasy, these translations provide an accessible introduction to Travis Baldree’s gentle, character-driven storytelling.
β Where Should You Start?
New to Travis Baldree? I recommend starting with Legends & Lattes, the novel that introduced readers to his distinctive approach to cosy fantasy.
At first glance, the idea of an orc warrior opening a coffee shop might sound rather unusual, particularly if you’re accustomed to fantasy stories built around dangerous quests, magical battles and epic conflicts.
However, that is precisely what makes the novel interesting.
Instead of focusing on defeating enemies, Baldree explores the challenges of building something meaningful, learning to trust others and finding a place where you genuinely belong.
The story combines familiar fantasy creatures with everyday concerns, creating a world that feels both imaginative and surprisingly relatable.
I particularly enjoyed the way Viv’s relationships developed around the coffee shop and how the people she met gradually became essential to her new life.
For me, the most memorable moments were those in which the characters demonstrated their friendship through actions rather than words.
If you enjoy found-family stories, gentle humour, second chances and fantasy that focuses on relationships rather than constant action, Legends & Lattes is an excellent place to begin.
It is also a lovely choice when you’re looking for something comforting between darker or more demanding reads.
And if the idea of spending a few hours in a fantasy coffee shop surrounded by interesting characters, freshly brewed coffee and delicious pastries sounds appealing, Travis Baldree might be exactly the author you’re looking for.
