📖 About Naomi Novik
Naomi Novik is an American fantasy author best known for the nine-volume Temeraire series, the Scholomance trilogy and the award-winning standalone novels Uprooted and Spinning Silver.
Born in New York in 1973 to a family of Polish heritage, Novik studied English literature at Brown University and later pursued computer science at Columbia University. Her interests in history, mythology, literature and technology have all influenced her writing.
She made her published novel debut in 2006 with His Majesty’s Dragon, the opening book of Temeraire. The series reimagines the Napoleonic Wars in a world where dragons serve alongside human military forces.
After completing the series, Novik expanded her literary range with fantasy inspired by European folklore. Uprooted (2015) and Spinning Silver (2018) reinterpret traditional fairy-tale elements through complex characters, dangerous magic and morally challenging decisions.
Her Scholomance trilogy, beginning with A Deadly Education (2020), takes a different approach to magical education. Its students face a school where survival is far from guaranteed, and the institution’s brutal rules expose inequalities extending well beyond its walls.
Novik is also a founder of the Organization for Transformative Works, the nonprofit organisation behind Archive of Our Own. Her contribution to fan culture reflects a longstanding interest in communities built around storytelling.
Her work has received major fantasy awards, including Nebula and Locus recognition.
🐉 The Temeraire Series
Temeraire is a completed historical fantasy series consisting of nine novels.
The books take place during an alternative version of the Napoleonic Wars, in which dragons are an essential part of military strategy.
The central relationship is between Captain William Laurence, a British naval officer, and Temeraire, an intelligent dragon whose existence transforms Laurence’s career and understanding of the world.
📚 Temeraire — Publication and Reading Order

| 7 | Crucible of Gold | 2012 | — |
| 8 | Blood of Tyrants | 2013 | — |
| 9 | League of Dragons | 2016 | — |
The series should be read in publication order because the political and personal developments continue across the novels.
The Romanian titles in the table refer to identified Nemira editions. A dash means that a Romanian edition has not been verified for that particular volume; it does not establish that no translation exists.
What Makes Temeraire Distinctive?
The series combines several elements:
- Alternative military history.
- Intelligent dragons with individual personalities.
- Naval and aerial warfare.
- International politics and diplomacy.
- Friendship, loyalty and moral responsibility.
- Questions about freedom and the treatment of sentient beings.
Although the Napoleonic setting provides the historical framework, the developing relationship between Laurence and Temeraire gives the series much of its emotional depth.
Temeraire Companion Fiction and Omnibus Editions
Novik has also written shorter fiction connected to Temeraire, including material collected in Golden Age and Other Stories.
The first three novels have appeared in collected editions, including In His Majesty’s Service: Three Novels of Temeraire.
These collections should not be counted as additional numbered instalments.
🏫 The Scholomance Trilogy
The Scholomance trilogy is a completed dark fantasy series set around an extraordinary magical school.
Unlike the welcoming institutions found in some magical-school fantasies, the Scholomance is a deadly environment. Students must learn magic while avoiding creatures that threaten their survival.
The story follows Galadriel “El” Higgins, a powerful young sorceress whose abilities come with dangerous implications.
📚 Scholomance — Publication and Reading Order
| Book | Original title | Year | Romanian title |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A Deadly Education | 2020 | Educație fatală |
| 2 | The Last Graduate | 2021 | Ultimul absolvent |
| 3 | The Golden Enclaves | 2022 | Enclavele de aur |
Romanian series title: Școala Solomonarilor
Romanian publisher: Nemira / Armada
The novels form a continuous narrative and should be read in order.
A Deadly Education (2020)
The opening volume introduces El and the deadly rules of the Scholomance.
As students struggle to survive until graduation, El must navigate alliances, social hierarchies and her own extraordinary magical abilities.
The Last Graduate (2021)
The second novel develops the conflicts established in A Deadly Education, raising the stakes for El and the other students as graduation approaches.
The Golden Enclaves (2022)
The final volume expands the story beyond the school’s immediate dangers, examining the larger magical world and the systems on which its powerful communities depend.
Themes in Scholomance
Beneath its magical-school setting, the trilogy examines privilege, inequality, survival, cooperation and the consequences of institutional power.
Novik uses the fantasy premise to explore who benefits from established systems, who pays their costs and whether those systems can be changed.
🌲 Standalone Fantasy
Uprooted (2015)
Uprooted is a standalone fantasy novel inspired by folklore and fairy tales.
Agnieszka lives near a corrupted forest that threatens the surrounding villages. Their principal protection comes from a mysterious wizard known as the Dragon, who periodically chooses a young woman to live in his tower.
The novel combines dangerous magic, friendship, sacrifice and the struggle against a seemingly overwhelming supernatural force.
Romanian title: Aleasa Dragonului
Romanian publisher: Nemira
Romanian edition: 2017
Translator: Oana Ionașcu
Uprooted is independent of both Temeraire and Scholomance.
Spinning Silver (2018)
Inspired in part by the Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale, Spinning Silver follows several women whose lives become entangled with dangerous bargains, political power and supernatural forces.
Miryem, the daughter of a moneylender, acquires a reputation for turning silver into gold. That reputation draws the attention of the Staryk, mysterious beings associated with winter.
The novel explores wealth, exploitation, family responsibility, antisemitism and the power of resourceful women.
Romanian title: Argintul preschimbat
Romanian publisher: Nemira / Armada
Romanian edition: 2019
Translator: Dan Nicolae Popescu
Like Uprooted, Spinning Silver is a standalone novel rather than part of a numbered series.
📜 Novellas and Short-Fiction Collections
Although Novik is best known for her novels, she has also written novellas, short stories and fiction connected to her longer works.

The story draws on fairy-tale traditions and explores family relationships, magic, resentment and reconciliation.
Will Supervillains Be on the Final?
Novik’s published catalogue also includes this superhero-themed graphic work, which belongs in a complete bibliography alongside her prose fiction.
Her individual short stories, anthology contributions and later collected editions will be catalogued chronologically in the dedicated bibliography page.

Naomi Novik’s Romanian translations have appeared principally through Nemira and its publishing imprints, including Nautilus and Armada.
Her Romanian publication history extends back to the Temeraire books and continues through Uprooted, Spinning Silver and the Scholomance trilogy.

❤️ Themes in Naomi Novik’s Writing
Folklore and Mythology
Novik frequently draws inspiration from traditional tales, particularly stories involving dangerous bargains, mysterious forests and supernatural beings.
Rather than simply reproducing familiar fairy tales, she gives their characters more agency and explores the consequences of their choices.
Power and Responsibility
Magic, military authority and social privilege create opportunities for power in her fictional worlds. Her characters repeatedly confront questions about how that power should be used.
Friendship and Loyalty
From Laurence’s relationship with Temeraire to the alliances formed within the Scholomance, Novik gives considerable attention to trust and cooperation.
Institutions and Inequality
Her books examine the rules governing societies and institutions. In Temeraire, these include military and political hierarchies; in Scholomance, the magical world’s privileges come under scrutiny.
Strong, Complex Characters
Novik’s protagonists are frequently intelligent, determined and imperfect. Their strength does not remove their vulnerabilities, and personal growth often requires them to question their own assumptions.
