📖 About Josh Malerman

Josh Malerman is an American horror writer and musician best known for Bird Box, the post-apocalyptic novel that inspired the Netflix adaptation starring Sandra Bullock. His fiction moves between psychological horror, supernatural suspense, dark fantasy and stories about the frightening consequences of isolation, obsession and the unknown.

Before Bird Box became his published debut in 2014, Malerman had already written numerous unpublished manuscripts. That long period of experimentation helped shape a remarkably varied body of work. Rather than returning to the same type of monster or setting, he often builds each book around a disturbing idea and explores how ordinary people respond when their understanding of reality begins to collapse.

Malerman is also a singer-songwriter with the rock band The High Strung. His musical background is part of a creative career that crosses literature and performance.

His books range from the blindfolded survival of Bird Box to the unsettling institutional world of Inspection, the supernatural dread of Daphne, and the family haunting at the centre of Incidents Around the House. His 2026 novel Pictures of You adds another standalone work to his catalogue.

📖 Malorie by Josh Malerman — Book Review

In my review of Malorie, I explore how the sequel shifts its focus from immediate survival to the lasting effects of fear. What interested me most was the conflict between Malorie’s determination to keep her family safe and her children’s growing desire for freedom.

The sequel offers a different kind of tension from Bird Box, but that change gives the story its own emotional purpose.

🖤 Themes in Josh Malerman’s Writing

Several recurring ideas connect Malerman’s otherwise very different books.

Fear of the Unknown

His horror often depends on what characters cannot see, explain or understand. In Bird Box, sight itself becomes dangerous. In Incidents Around the House, a familiar home becomes threatening through the perspective of a child.

Isolation and Control

Malerman repeatedly places characters in restrictive environments. Sometimes those restrictions are necessary for survival; at other times, they become instruments of manipulation.

Inspection takes this idea into a deliberately controlled educational setting, while Malorie examines what happens when precautions begin to limit the lives they are intended to protect.

Family, Protection and Vulnerability

The relationships between parents and children are central to several of his books. These stories explore difficult questions about responsibility, independence and the price of keeping loved ones safe.

Psychological and Supernatural Horror

Malerman frequently allows the supernatural and psychological dimensions of his stories to overlap. A frightening event may be external, but its impact depends on a character’s memories, expectations and fears.
