๐ About Freida McFadden
Freida McFadden is an American bestselling author of psychological thrillers, domestic suspense and medical fiction. Known for her short chapters, unreliable narrators and unexpected plot twists, she has become one of the most recognisable names in contemporary thriller fiction.
Alongside her writing career, McFadden is a physician. Her medical background has influenced several of her novels, particularly those involving hospitals, psychological tension and questions about memory, identity and human behaviour.
Her international breakthrough came with The Housemaid (2022), the first book in a psychological thriller series centred on Millie Calloway. The novel’s success was followed by The Housemaid’s Secret (2023) and The Housemaid Is Watching (2024), as well as the companion short story The Housemaid’s Wedding (2024).
Beyond the Housemaid series, McFadden has written numerous standalone thrillers, including Never Lie, The Inmate, The Coworker, The Teacher, The Boyfriend, The Crash and The Tenant.
Although psychological thrillers are now her best-known work, she also writes medical humour and women’s fiction. Her Dr. Jane McGill books offer a lighter perspective on life in medicine.
McFadden’s stories frequently explore secrets hidden inside apparently ordinary families, relationships built on deception and the unsettling possibility that the person telling the story may not be telling the truth.
๐ Why I Read Freida McFadden
I enjoy a good psychological thriller, especially one that creates tension through atmosphere, secrets and the feeling that something is wrong long before the characters understand what it is.
Freida McFadden knows how to make a book difficult to put down.
Her chapters are short, the plots move quickly, and there is usually another revelation waiting just when I think I have understood what is happening.
My BookFairy review of Never Lie reflects both what I enjoy about her writing and what sometimes frustrates me.
I particularly liked the isolated setting, the snowstorm and the mysterious disappearance at the centre of the story. The recordings left behind by a missing psychiatrist were an especially effective way of gradually revealing the past.
At the same time, I felt that the novel relied too heavily on twists. The surprises kept me reading, but not every revelation felt completely convincing afterwards.
That distinction matters to me.
I love a thriller that surprises me, but I love it even more when the ending makes me reconsider everything that came before and realise how carefully the clues were planted.
McFadden certainly knows how to entertain. Whether her books become personal favourites depends on how successfully the characters, atmosphere and final revelations work together.

Never Lie (2022)
Romanian title: Sฤ nu mฤ minศi
A newly married couple becomes trapped by a snowstorm inside the former home of a psychiatrist who disappeared under mysterious circumstances.
An isolated house, disturbing recordings and several unreliable characters create a fast-paced psychological thriller.
I enjoyed its claustrophobic atmosphere and compelling mystery, although the increasingly elaborate twists were less satisfying than I had hoped.

๐ Reading Order
Most of Freida McFadden’s psychological thrillers are standalone novels and can be read independently.
However, she has also written several connected books and series.
๐ The Housemaid Series โ Recommended Reading Order
The Housemaid series follows Millie Calloway through a succession of dangerous situations, complicated relationships and unsettling discoveries.
For first-time readers, I recommend the following order:
- The Housemaid (2022) โ Menajera
- The Housemaid’s Secret (2023) โ Secretul menajerei
- The Housemaid’s Wedding (2024) โ Nunta menajerei (short story)
- The Housemaid Is Watching (2024) โ Menajera e cu ochii pe tine
Although the third full-length novel was published before the wedding short story, the order above follows the story’s internal chronology.
The short story can also be read after the third novel as a flashback.
๐ BookFairy Recommendation: Start with The Housemaid and continue with The Housemaid’s Secret. The later books can reveal information about earlier events, so publication order for the main novels remains the best introduction.
๐ฉบ Dr. Jane McGill Series โ Reading Order
Unlike McFadden’s darker psychological thrillers, the Dr. Jane McGill books are medical comedies featuring humour, professional challenges and personal relationships.
- The Devil Wears Scrubs (2013)
- The Devil You Know (2017)
Recommended reading order: Publication order.
๐ง Medical Thrillers
McFadden’s medical thrillers include:
- Dead Med โ originally published as Suicide Med (2014).
- Brain Damage (2016).
These titles appear together in some bibliographical series listings under Prescription: Murder, although they are also presented individually in the author’s catalogue.

โญ Where Should You Start?
If you’re new to Freida McFadden, there are several good starting points.
For a connected thriller series: Begin with The Housemaid. It introduces Millie and establishes the central characters and relationships developed in later books.
For an isolated-house mystery: Try Never Lie. Its snowbound setting and missing-person mystery make it an accessible standalone thriller.
For a medical setting: Consider Ward D, particularly if you enjoy psychological suspense involving hospitals and institutional environments.
For a lighter read: Start with The Devil Wears Scrubs, which moves away from McFadden’s darker thrillers and towards medical humour.
๐ BookFairy Recommendation: If you prefer reading an author’s work without committing to a series, a standalone novel is the easiest place to begin. Never Lie offers a clear introduction to McFadden’s fast pacing, misdirection and twist-driven storytelling.
๐ My Favourite Freida McFadden Book
I’m not ready to name a definitive favourite from Freida McFadden’s bibliography.
My review of Never Lie captures what I appreciate about her writing: effective atmosphere, accessible storytelling and an impressive ability to keep readers turning the pages.
It also explains why I sometimes find her thrillers less satisfying than their premises suggest. A shocking ending is entertaining, but I want the revelations to feel earned and the characters to remain interesting after the myster
