📖 About Florin Pîtea
Florin Pîtea is a Romanian science fiction and fantasy writer whose work explores cyberpunk, steampunk, alternative realities, technology, identity and the relationship between individuals and the societies they inhabit.
Born in Câmpina in 1971, Pîtea made his literary debut in 1992 in Colecția de Povestiri Științifico-Fantastice Anticipația. He subsequently became an established presence in Romanian speculative fiction through novels, short stories, novellas and contributions to literary magazines and anthologies.
His fiction includes the cyberpunk novels Gangland (2006) and Anul terminal (2012), alongside collections such as Necropolis (2001) and An/Organic (2004). He is also the author of the steampunk project Cartea cu scoarțe de argint, ferecate, which began with Delirul încapsulat (2015) and continued with Motorul de căutare (2020).
Beyond fiction, Pîtea has written academic studies and literary criticism. His research interests include British and American literature, postmodernism and cyberpunk, particularly the work of writers such as William Gibson.
His work occupies an interesting place in Romanian speculative fiction, combining the technological concerns of international cyberpunk with distinctive literary experimentation and Romanian storytelling traditions.
💜 Why I Read Florin Pîtea
Science fiction has always been one of my favourite genres, especially when it explores ideas about technology, society and what it means to be human.
Romanian science fiction is particularly interesting to me because it offers a different perspective on themes I have encountered in international literature. There is something rewarding about discovering how Romanian authors interpret familiar speculative ideas and develop their own fictional worlds.
My introduction to Florin Pîtea’s work on BookFairy is Necropolis, a collection I read in 2018.
Revisiting a book after so many years presents an interesting challenge. Some details inevitably fade, while certain impressions remain. I prefer to acknowledge that distance honestly rather than reconstruct reactions I can no longer remember clearly.
That is also part of what I want BookFairy to preserve: not just the books themselves, but the experience of reading them at different moments in my life.
Pîtea’s wider bibliography gives me plenty more to explore, particularly his cyberpunk novels and interconnected steampunk stories.

📖 Reading Order
Florin Pîtea’s books include standalone novels, short-story collections and interconnected fictional projects.
For readers discovering his work, publication order offers a useful introduction to the development of his writing.
📚 Major Fiction — Publication Order
- Necropolis (2001) — Short-story collection.
- An/Organic (2004) — Short-story collection.
- Gangland (2006) — Cyberpunk novel.
- Anul terminal (2012) — Cyberpunk novel.
- Delirul încapsulat (2015) — First volume of Cartea cu scoarțe de argint, ferecate.
- Motorul de căutare (2020) — Second volume of Cartea cu scoarțe de argint, ferecate.
- Fierul și fiara (2022) — Collection of science fiction and fantasy stories and novellas.
These are his principal fiction volumes, not a replacement for the complete bibliography, which also covers individual stories, essays, translations and other publications.
⚙️ Cartea cu scoarțe de argint, ferecate — Reading Order
Florin Pîtea’s steampunk project brings together imaginative technology, alternative history, unusual characters and interconnected adventures.
The published volumes are:
- Delirul încapsulat (2015)
- Motorul de căutare (2020)
Recommended reading order: Publication order.
Although these volumes contain interconnected stories, they are designed to contribute to a larger fictional world. Reading Delirul încapsulat first provides the necessary introduction before continuing with Motorul de căutare.
🌐 Cyberpunk Fiction
Pîtea’s cyberpunk writing explores technological change, urban environments, social structures and the consequences of advanced technology.
Two of his major novels are:
- Gangland (2006)
- Anul terminal (2012)
His earlier collections, particularly Necropolis, also contain fiction connected to his wider cyberpunk interests.
Readers who enjoy William Gibson, Bruce Sterling and the literary traditions of cyberpunk may find this aspect of Pîtea’s work particularly appealing.
These titles should not be treated as a conventional numbered trilogy: the broader fictional connections do not make them a formally numbered series.

⭐ Where Should You Start?
If you’re new to Florin Pîtea, I would suggest choosing your starting point according to the type of speculative fiction you enjoy.
For short science fiction: Start with Necropolis. It offers an introduction to his earlier writing and some of the themes that recur across his work.
For cyberpunk: Try Gangland, particularly if you’re interested in technologically transformed societies, urban subcultures and dystopian settings.
For steampunk: Begin with Delirul încapsulat, the first volume of Cartea cu scoarțe de argint, ferecate.
For a mixture of science fiction and fantasy: Consider Fierul și fiara, which brings together shorter works in both genres.
My own BookFairy journey began with Necropolis, but there is no single starting point that will suit every reader.

So far, Necropolis is the Florin Pîtea title I have reviewed on BookFairy.
I’m not going to choose a definitive favourite from his entire body of work without having explored more of it.
What interests me most about continuing with his books is the opportunity to move between different branches of speculative fiction: from cyberpunk and technological futures to steampunk, alternative histories and imaginative short stories.
