📝 First Impressions

Luizienii by Miloș Dumbraci is a Romanian steampunk novella that combines political intrigue, speculative technology and an imaginative alternative society. I read it in 2016, and although I no longer remember every detail of the experience, I know that I absolutely loved it. It was one of those books that impressed me enough to earn a full five stars.

The premise is fascinating. In a world ruled by the Sun King, a privileged aristocratic class known as the Luizieni possesses extraordinary powers granted by the monarch himself. Yet these gifts come at an extraordinary price: the king controls almost every moment of their lives, from their decisions to their betrayals. Their elevated social position conceals a fundamental lack of freedom.

What makes the concept particularly appealing is the contradiction at its centre. The Luizieni appear to possess everything that ordinary people might envy, yet their privileges make them dependent on a ruler whose authority extends far beyond conventional political power. It is an intriguing foundation for a story about ambition, control, loyalty and the complicated relationship between freedom and privilege.

💜 What I Loved

One of the most compelling aspects of Luizienii is its imaginative world. Miloș Dumbraci combines familiar historical influences with extraordinary speculative elements, creating an alternative society that feels both recognisable and wonderfully strange. The court of the Sun King, the catacombs beneath the City of Lights, the deserts of the Valenians and a London ruled by plastic lords suggest a world far larger than the immediate political struggle.

I particularly appreciate the creativity of this setting. Mercenaries armed with vibro-swords, musketeers, adventurers and aristocrats with supernatural privileges coexist in a society shaped by political manipulation. These elements give the novella a distinctive combination of steampunk adventure, science fiction and fantasy.

The political allegory is equally interesting. By presenting aristocratic privilege as something inseparable from absolute control, Dumbraci raises questions about the true meaning of power. The Luizieni occupy a position above the common people, yet they are not masters of their own destinies. Their apparent superiority comes with restrictions that challenge the very idea of freedom.

Another strength of the premise is the network of competing interests. Alliances can be bought, loyalty is uncertain and betrayal seems almost inevitable. The possibility of revolution or war creates an atmosphere of instability in which every relationship may conceal another ambition.

I also find the contrast between the monarch’s immense power and his apparent preoccupation with art particularly intriguing. It adds another layer of strangeness to the world, suggesting that the motivations of those who control society may be very different from those of the people struggling within it.

Although I cannot reconstruct my exact reactions to individual scenes after ten years, my five-star rating is a clear reminder of how much I enjoyed this imaginative and ambitious novella.

🤔 What Didn’t Quite Work for Me

I don’t have a specific criticism of Luizienii that I can honestly identify today. I read it in 2016, and while the finer details of my reading experience have faded, the exceptionally positive impression I recorded at the time remains.

The story’s combination of political intrigue, unusual terminology and speculative world-building might require some concentration from readers who prefer straightforward adventures. Its many factions, settings and competing interests suggest a relatively complex fictional society, particularly for a novella.

However, I wouldn’t present that complexity as a flaw. It is part of what makes this type of speculative fiction interesting, and I have no reason to believe it diminished my own enjoyment.

Rather than inventing a weakness simply to fill this section, I would prefer to acknowledge that I remember Luizienii as an outstanding reading experience without a particular disappointment attached to it.

👥 Who Would Enjoy This Book?

Luizienii is an excellent choice for readers who enjoy steampunk, alternative history and speculative fiction with strong political themes. Its combination of extraordinary aristocrats, unusual technology and a society built around absolute power makes it especially interesting for those who appreciate imaginative world-building.

Readers who enjoy stories about manipulation, social inequality, fragile alliances and the struggle for freedom may find its central conflict particularly appealing. The relationship between the Sun King and the Luizieni offers a fascinating variation on the familiar idea that power always comes at a price.

I would also recommend exploring this novella if you enjoy discovering Romanian science fiction and fantasy authors. Miloș Dumbraci demonstrates the creative possibilities of Romanian speculative literature through a setting that combines historical inspiration with highly original concepts.

For anyone who appreciates ambitious ideas presented in a relatively compact format, Luizienii deserves attention.

💭 Final Thoughts

Looking back on Luizienii, I am reminded of how rewarding it can be to discover an imaginative Romanian speculative fiction story. The novella’s combination of steampunk technology, political allegory and extraordinary social structures offers a fascinating foundation for an adventure filled with power struggles and intrigue.

I cannot pretend to remember every scene or character from a book I read in 2016, but I can trust the enthusiasm reflected in the rating I gave it at the time. Five stars were never something I awarded lightly, and Luizienii clearly made a remarkable impression on me.

There is also something bittersweet about revisiting the work of Miloș Dumbraci today. His literary pseudonym has become much less visible, and his former website is no longer available. I would have loved to see more stories from such an imaginative voice in Romanian speculative fiction.

For me, Luizienii remains one of those discoveries that remind me how much creativity exists within Romanian science fiction and fantasy. Even after a decade, it retains a special place among my favourite reads from 2016.
