🌙 The Full Moon Coffee Shop
The Full Moon Coffee Shop is Mai Mochizuki’s internationally successful fantasy series, centred on a mysterious café that appears beneath the full moon.
Unlike an ordinary coffee shop, this magical establishment is operated by talking cats who offer unusual desserts, drinks and astrological guidance.
The visitors are people struggling with difficult circumstances, emotional uncertainty or important decisions.
Through their encounters with the café’s feline staff, they begin to discover unexpected connections between their experiences and the possibility of changing their lives.
The novels combine gentle fantasy with emotional storytelling, exploring themes of kindness, fate, personal responsibility and human relationships.
English-language reading order:
- The Full Moon Coffee Shop — originally published in Japan in 2020
- Best Wishes from the Full Moon Coffee Shop — continuation of the series
- Dreamers of the Full Moon Coffee Shop — further adventures in the same magical world
The original Japanese series includes additional volumes beyond those currently available in English.
One of its distinctive features is the way separate characters and storylines gradually reveal connections, creating a larger narrative in which apparently insignificant events can acquire unexpected meaning.
🔎 Holmes of Kyoto
Known in Japanese as Kyōto Teramachi Sanjō no Holmes, this long-running mystery series follows characters involved in solving mysteries connected to antiques, art and historical objects.
The stories are closely associated with Kyoto, a city renowned for its cultural heritage, historic buildings and traditional arts.
The series combines contemporary mystery fiction with Japanese history, culture and relationships.
It has become one of Mochizuki’s most successful domestic publications, extending to more than twenty volumes.
Holmes of Kyoto has also inspired manga and anime adaptations, expanding the audience for its characters and stories.
For readers interested in Japanese mystery fiction, the series offers a different side of Mochizuki’s writing from the gentle magical realism of The Full Moon Coffee Shop.
🌸 Alice in Kyoto Forest
Known in Japanese as Kyōraku no Mori no Arisu, this fantasy series combines elements of Japanese culture with an imaginative, fairy-tale-inspired setting.
Originally published as a three-volume series between 2018 and 2019, it explores a magical interpretation of Kyoto.
The series has also received a manga adaptation, introducing its story to readers through illustrated storytelling.
Like several of Mochizuki’s other works, Alice in Kyoto Forest demonstrates her interest in combining familiar Japanese environments with unusual or fantastical experiences.
✨ What Makes Mai Mochizuki’s Writing Special?
One of Mai Mochizuki’s greatest strengths is her ability to bring together seemingly separate characters and experiences.
Her stories frequently explore how people’s lives influence one another, sometimes in ways they do not immediately recognise.
Events that initially appear insignificant can eventually reveal a deeper connection, giving the narrative a satisfying sense of structure and completion.
Another distinctive quality of her writing is the combination of gentle fantasy with recognisably human concerns.
Although the settings may involve talking cats, mysterious cafés or other unusual elements, the emotional experiences of her characters remain familiar.
They face disappointment, uncertainty, difficult relationships and the consequences of decisions made earlier in their lives.
The magical elements provide an imaginative way to explore these concerns without completely overshadowing the characters.
Mochizuki’s fiction is also strongly connected to Japanese culture and atmosphere.
Her stories frequently incorporate recognisable locations, traditional beliefs and everyday experiences, creating a distinctive sense of place.
For readers who enjoy thoughtful fiction with a touch of magic, her novels offer a combination of comfort, reflection and imaginative storytelling.
📖 Mai Mochizuki on BookFairy
🌙 The Full Moon Coffee Shop
My first BookFairy review featuring Mai Mochizuki explores The Full Moon Coffee Shop, a short but surprisingly meaningful novel about a magical café run by talking cats.
I listened to the Romanian audiobook, Cafeneaua Lună plină, narrated by Ioana Mărcoiu.
What impressed me most was the way the author connected the different characters and their experiences.
At first, their stories seem separate, but gradually the connections become clear, creating a beautifully structured narrative.
I particularly enjoyed the sense of completion when everything finally came together.
Despite the novel’s relatively short length, I found it thoughtful, emotionally satisfying and more profound than I initially expected.
The magical atmosphere of the café was delightful, and I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook narration.

💜 My Favourite Mai Mochizuki Reading Experience
One of the things I appreciated most about The Full Moon Coffee Shop was how much meaning Mai Mochizuki managed to include in such a short novel.
The premise immediately appealed to me: a mysterious café, talking cats, astrology and people searching for answers to problems in their lives.
However, what made the story memorable was not simply its magical atmosphere.
It was the way everything connected.
As the characters’ experiences gradually came together, I began to recognise the larger structure hidden beneath their individual stories.
For me, the entire novel felt like a circle.
By the end, that circle was complete.
I found the conclusion wonderfully satisfying, and yet I would happily have spent a little longer in the world Mochizuki had created.
I also thoroughly enjoyed listening to Ioana Mărcoiu’s Romanian audiobook narration, which complemented the gentle atmosphere of the story.
The Full Moon Coffee Shop reminded me that a novel does not need hundreds of pages to explore meaningful ideas.
Sometimes a few hours are enough to create a thoughtful, memorable and unexpectedly profound reading experience.
And sometimes, even when a story reaches exactly the right ending, you still wish you could stay a little longer.
