📖 About M. J. Arlidge

M. J. Arlidge is a British crime fiction author, screenwriter and television producer, best known for creating Detective Inspector Helen Grace, the central character in one of Britain’s most successful contemporary crime thriller series.

Before establishing himself as a bestselling novelist, Arlidge worked extensively in television drama, contributing to productions including Silent Witness. His background in screenwriting is reflected in his novels’ short chapters, rapid changes of perspective and dramatic pacing.

His debut thriller, Eeny Meeny, was published in 2014 and introduced readers to DI Helen Grace, a determined and psychologically complex detective investigating a series of disturbing crimes in Southampton.

The novel launched a long-running series known for its unsettling crimes, moral dilemmas, psychological tension and recurring characters.

Alongside the Helen Grace books, Arlidge has written standalone psychological thrillers and collaborated with other crime writers, demonstrating an interest in stories that explore fear, guilt, revenge and the darker aspects of human behaviour.

On BookFairy, I’m exploring M. J. Arlidge’s work in publication order, beginning with Eeny Meeny. My reviews focus on the reading experience as much as the mysteries themselves: the characters, atmosphere, storytelling style and whether the suspense keeps me engaged.

💜 Why I Read M. J. Arlidge

I’ve always enjoyed discovering crime series built around memorable detectives. There’s something particularly satisfying about following the same investigator through multiple cases and watching their personality, relationships and professional challenges develop over time.

That’s what attracted me to M. J. Arlidge’s Helen Grace series.

I started with Eeny Meeny in audiobook format. Its disturbing premise immediately caught my attention, and I was curious to discover how Helen Grace would approach such an unusual investigation.

What I found particularly interesting was Helen herself. She’s far from a straightforward detective, and her personal struggles suggest that there’s much more to discover about her as the series progresses.

Not everything worked equally well for me. The frequent changes of perspective made it difficult to become fully immersed in the story, even though the atmosphere and central mystery held my interest.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed meeting Helen Grace, and I’m interested in seeing how both the character and Arlidge’s writing evolve throughout the series.

Although the storytelling approach didn’t always suit my reading preferences, the novel gave me enough reasons to continue exploring the series.

🇷🇴 Standalone Thriller in Romanian

Eye for an Eye (2023) was published by Editura Trei as Ochi pentru ochi (2024).

This is a standalone psychological thriller rather than an instalment in the Helen Grace series.

📚 Other Books by M. J. Arlidge

Although Helen Grace is his best-known creation, M. J. Arlidge has also published independent thrillers.

These books can be read without prior knowledge of the Helen Grace series.

🔎 Standalone Thrillers

  • A Gift for Dying (2019) — also published under the title The Last Rites.
  • Eye for an Eye (2023) — a psychological thriller exploring justice, revenge and the consequences of violence.

✍️ Collaborative Novels

Arlidge has also worked with other established thriller writers:

  • The Wrong Child (2024) — with Julia Crouch.
  • The Reunion (2024) — with Steph Broadribb.
  • Your Child Next (2025) — with Andy Maslen.
  • The Mistake (2025) — with Lisa Hall.

These collaborations are independent works and should not be confused with Helen Grace novels.

🎧 Audio Fiction and Other Writing

Beyond his novels, Arlidge has worked in television screenwriting and audio storytelling.

His audio thriller Six Degrees of Assassination is another example of his interest in suspense-driven narratives.

The complete bibliography covers his fiction, shorter works, collaborative publications and relevant alternative titles without unnecessarily duplicating reprints.

⭐ Where Should You Start with M. J. Arlidge?

If you’ve never read M. J. Arlidge, I recommend starting with Eeny Meeny.

It introduces Helen Grace and establishes the darker tone of the series.

Readers who enjoy continuing detective characters will probably find the Helen Grace books the most rewarding starting point, particularly if they prefer stories that combine police investigations with psychological suspense.

If you’re looking for a single thriller without committing to a long series, Eye for an Eye offers an alternative.

For Romanian readers, Ghici cine moare primul is the natural introduction.

💜 My M. J. Arlidge Reading Experience

So far, my experience with M. J. Arlidge has been shaped by Eeny Meeny.

I appreciated its unsettling central idea and the introduction of Helen Grace, but I wasn’t entirely convinced by the constant shifts between narrative perspectives.

For me, a thriller works best when its structure allows the atmosphere to build and gives me enough time to connect with its characters.

Despite those reservations, Helen Grace intrigued me. I want to see whether the later novels develop a storytelling rhythm that suits me better and how her character changes over time.

I haven’t chosen a favourite M. J. Arlidge book yet. That will come as I continue working through the series.
