Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree – A Cosy Fantasy About Friendship, Kindness and Second Chances

cosy fantasy cosy fantasy

📝 First Impressions

An orc warrior who decides to abandon her life of fighting and open a coffee shop? I have to admit, it is a rather unusual premise for a fantasy novel, and that was part of its appeal. After years of earning her living with a sword, Viv has decided that she wants something entirely different. She has saved enough money to give herself a chance, found a building in the city of Thune and set her heart on introducing coffee to people who have absolutely no idea what it is. Naturally, things are not quite as straightforward as she imagines.

What I found interesting was the contrast between Viv’s previous life and the one she is trying to build. She knows how to fight, but running a business, dealing with customers and trusting people are unfamiliar territory. Travis Baldree takes the familiar fantasy setting, complete with orcs, succubi and other fantastic creatures, and uses it to tell a surprisingly ordinary story about starting again. There are no kingdoms to save or ancient evils to defeat. Much of the novel is concerned with renovating a building, preparing drinks, making pastries and attracting customers. It sounds almost too simple, but there is something rather enjoyable about watching a character tackle everyday problems in a world where she could just as easily be fighting monsters.

💜 What I Loved

The thing I enjoyed most about Legends & Lattes was the way the characters gradually came together around the coffee shop. Viv begins with a dream that belongs entirely to her, but she soon discovers that determination alone is not enough. Tandri, Cal and Thimble each contribute something essential, and I liked that their relationships developed through working together rather than through dramatic declarations of friendship. The café slowly becomes more than a business, attracting people who enjoy spending time there and giving the characters a place where they genuinely belong. I also loved the little details surrounding its development, particularly the introduction of new drinks and Thimble’s increasingly tempting creations. I could almost smell the coffee and freshly baked pastries.

However, what really won me over was the way everyone reacted when the coffee shop was destroyed. After watching Viv work so hard to establish her business, seeing everything reduced to ruins was painful, but the response of the people around her was wonderful. They came together and helped rebuild it, each contributing whatever they could. Nobody needed a grand speech about friendship or loyalty; they simply recognised that someone they cared about was in trouble and did something about it. That was probably my favourite part of the entire novel.

And then Viv did something I appreciated even more. Once the café had been rebuilt, she gave the people who had helped her shares in the business. I absolutely loved that gesture. She understood that the coffee shop was no longer solely the result of her own efforts and that the others deserved more than a thank-you. They had invested their time, abilities and enthusiasm in making her dream possible, and she recognised their contribution by allowing them to share in its future. For me, that decision showed how much Viv had changed. The woman who had once relied on her strength and her sword had learned to value cooperation, friendship and the people who stood beside her.

🤔 What Didn’t Quite Work for Me

There is very little conventional action in Legends & Lattes, and the story moves at a deliberately relaxed pace. I did not particularly mind that, because it suited the atmosphere Baldree was trying to create, although I occasionally wished he had explored the characters and the wider fantasy world in greater depth. We meet some interesting creatures, but their backgrounds and the society they inhabit remain largely unexplored. The plot is also fairly straightforward, and there are moments when it is not particularly difficult to guess how things might turn out. None of this ruined the experience for me, but I think the novel could have offered a little more without losing its gentle character.

I listened to the Romanian audiobook on AudioTribe, narrated by Flavius Călin. Overall, I thought he did a good job, although his performance was not entirely consistent. There were occasional moments when the narration stumbled slightly or did not sound quite as natural as it should have. They were minor interruptions rather than serious problems, and I still enjoyed listening to the book.

👥 Who Would Enjoy This Book?

I would recommend Legends & Lattes to readers who enjoy fantasy but do not necessarily need battles, complicated magic systems or constant danger to keep them interested. This is a story in which the characters and their relationships matter much more than the action, and its appeal lies in watching a rather unlikely group of people build something together. Anyone who enjoys found-family stories, gentle humour and the idea of beginning a completely new chapter in life will probably find plenty to like here.

It would also make a lovely choice for someone looking for a comforting read after something particularly dark or demanding. There is a certain pleasure in spending a few hours in a fictional coffee shop, surrounded by interesting characters and the smell of imaginary pastries. On the other hand, readers who prefer fast-paced adventures or intricate fantasy worlds might find it a little too quiet for their tastes. It really depends on what you expect from the genre.

💭 Final Thoughts

I enjoyed Legends & Lattes considerably, but what I will remember most is not the coffee, the pastries or even the rather charming idea of an orc becoming a café owner. It is the way people came together when Viv needed them. I have always appreciated stories in which characters demonstrate their affection through actions, and the rebuilding of the coffee shop was a particularly satisfying example. It felt good to see people helping one another simply because they cared.

Viv’s decision to share ownership of the business was the perfect finishing touch for me. I liked that she did not forget the people who had helped her along the way or take their contributions for granted. She began the novel wanting to create a different life for herself, and by the end she had built something that mattered to an entire group of people. I found that genuinely lovely.

Travis Baldree has written a warm, entertaining fantasy novel with an appealing cast of characters and a refreshingly different approach to the genre. It is not an especially complicated story, nor does it pretend to be, but I appreciated its humour, its friendships and, above all, its generosity. Sometimes it is simply nice to read about people being good to one another, particularly when they have every reason to give up and choose to carry on together instead.

📚 Reading Order – Legends & Lattes Series

1. Legends & Lattes (2022) – Viv, a battle-weary orc, leaves her mercenary life behind and decides to open a coffee shop in a city where almost nobody knows what coffee is. What begins as a personal dream gradually becomes a story about friendship, community and finding a place to belong.

2. Bookshops & Bonedust (2023) – A prequel set earlier in Viv’s life. After an injury forces her to recover in a quiet seaside town, she becomes involved with a struggling bookshop and discovers unexpected friendships. Although its events take place before Legends & Lattes, it is best approached after the first novel.

3. Brigands & Breadknives (2025) – The third novel shifts its attention to Fern, the bookseller introduced in Bookshops & Bonedust. Looking for a fresh start, she becomes caught up in an unexpected adventure that challenges her ideas about happiness, friendship and the direction of her life.

4. Tales from the Territory (2026) – A collection of shorter stories set in the Legends & Lattes universe, offering further glimpses into the lives of familiar characters.

The novels can be enjoyed as standalone stories, but publication order is recommended. Bookshops & Bonedust is chronologically a prequel, while Brigands & Breadknives takes place after Legends & Lattes.
