In Bucharest, Romania, there are two major book fairs throughout the year: Bookfest in summer (first week of June) and Gaudeamus in winter (first week of December).
There is something magical about walking into a place where thousands of books are waiting to be discovered. That is exactly how I felt when I visited Bookfest Bucharest 2026, Romania’s second largest book fair, held at Romexpo between 3–7 June 2026. This year’s edition welcomed readers, publishers, authors, translators, and literary enthusiasts from across Romania and beyond, transforming Bucharest into a true capital of books for five unforgettable days.
First Impressions
The moment I stepped into Pavilion B2, I was greeted by rows upon rows of colourful book displays, excited readers carrying overflowing tote bags, and the unmistakable scent of freshly printed pages. As someone who spends most of the year buying books online, there is something special about being able to browse shelves in person, discover unexpected titles, and chat directly with publishers.
Bookfest isn’t just a book sale—it feels like a celebration of reading itself.
The Joy of Book Hunting
One of my favourite parts of the day was wandering between the publisher stands without a plan. I arrived with a small wishlist and left with a much larger pile of books than I intended to buy.
The fair offered everything from contemporary fiction and yfantasy to history, children’s books, memoirs, and beautifully illustrated editions. Many publishers had exclusive discounts, special bundles, and limited editions available only during the event, making it a paradise for book collectors and bargain hunters alike.
Some of my best finds were books I had never heard of before. That’s the beauty of a book fair—you never know which title will suddenly catch your eye and become your next favourite read.

I also loved the sense of community. Everywhere I looked, people were discussing books, recommending titles, comparing purchases, and sharing reading experiences. It reminded me that reading may be a solitary activity, but readers themselves form a wonderfully passionate community.
For me there is a tradition now to attend the bookfair. But this summer it was my second time when I volunteered at Nemira’s publishing house stand.

Bulgaria Takes Centre Stage
This year, Bulgaria was the Guest of Honour, bringing a strong cultural programme and a delegation of Bulgarian writers and publishing professionals to Bucharest. The focus on Bulgarian literature gave visitors a chance to discover voices and stories that many international readers might not otherwise encounter.
As a reader who enjoys exploring literature from different cultures, I found this particularly exciting. Some of the most memorable recommendations I received during the fair came from publishers showcasing Bulgarian authors.
